The Apollo program was named after the Greek God, after the Mercury mission, but who was Apollo the God? Was Apollo that important that NASA deemed him fit enough to be a set of space missions? In fact, he was. Apollo was the God of more than eight different things, he has a very strong background, and he took part in many myths.

When Apollo was only four days old, he killed the dragon. He was gifted his bow and arrows at birth by Hephaestus, and had already learned how to use them. “Apollo went to mount Parnassus, and there killed the dragon Python, who had pursued his mother during her wanderings, before she reached Delos” (Apollo (Apollon)). Once he killed the dragon, he learned the art of oracles and prophecies and begun to tell people their futures in the Temple of Delphi. He was worshipped highly by both the Gods and the people, because he always told the truth when giving prophecies. Another myth of Apollo has to do with Apollo and Daphne. “When Apollo saw Daphne for the first time, he got struck by the arrows of Eros and madly fell in love with her” (Greek God Apollo Myths). Thus, while the physique of Torso of Dionysos or Apollo is blatantly one of a youth man, one striking aspect is that of the shoulders, which appears more feminine than masculine. This feminine quality is a result of the slenderness of the curve of the shoulder, especially around the bicep. Yet, instead of this feminine feature detracting from the work, it instead humanizes the god by softening their visual representation. Moreover, the physical strength of the figure’s body could be taken as an embodiment of spiritual…

Apollo has been called "The most Greek of all the gods". He is thought of as a beautiful figure in Greek poetry, depicted with long tangleless hair and a face of the beardless youth. He's treated as the master musician, the archer god, the god of light, the speaker of truth, and the healer. He's sought out by the people as an Oracle, the common folk looking towards him to know their prophecies and predict their futures. Apollo at Delphi was a purely beneficial power, since he guided the people to have a glance at the God's wills.…

For example, the “temple …” (Callimachus 41) and while in “the hall of Zeus, the gods …” (Hymn 178) both “tremble.” Along Apollo “founding” (Callimachus 42) or constructing “foundations” (Hymn 183) for a temple (Hymn 183) or a “shrine” (Callimachus 43). Though these components and a few other parts of the plot do seem quite similar, these parallels can be explained through Callimachus’s general knowledge of the Greco-Roman gods. Callimachus could have easily obtained information about Apollo without ever seeing or hearing the Homeric hymn through other stories about the god circulating in his…

In the middle of summer, Apollo was walking in the midst of the mortals, disguised so that his true identity would not be revealed. He found mortals quite amusing, seeing as they weren’t impeccable like the gods and how melodramatic they could become in such short periods of time. He looked at them as simpler creatures, especially in mind’s capacity, compared to a god like himself. Even though he believed in a separation between mortals and deities, he found that he oddly enjoyed walking through them and studying their actions. Instead of humbling themselves and forming a connection with mortals, they change their appearance to a family member or companion in order to become more relatable. During the onslaught of Patroclus, Hector debates with himself on whether or not to retreat in order to save the lives of his men. As he was contemplating, Apollo appears in the form of Hector’s uncle, Asius, and convinces him to fight Patroclus (436).…

From birth, Apollo was born with power and recognition as a god, while Hermes had to build his reputation through his use of metis. If the two brothers were to be compared to each other, Apollo would be seen more as a god-like entity. Based on their roles, their resolute attitude towards things and the recognition they had since birth will show the difference between Apollo and Hermes.…
