Who I Am Today Essay

Improved Essays
Being who you are today, whether you like it or not, has to do with your parents/ guardians and what they did or did not do for you. As I grew up moving from home to home I gathered both good and bad memories and even chunks of the past pushed so far back I don 't even remember a year or two from when I was younger. My father definitely shaped who I am today; I 'm not quite sure if he impacted my life because I do not know how I would have been without his drunkenness and neglect. Now granted my father was sober some of my life and I do have great memories of the love my dad had for me at one point, but as time went on and my dad 's addiction to alcohol turned to drugs, his love to his addiction was far more powerful than his love for his family and his own life. Having a father who is an addict can be harmful to one 's emotional state, but can also make them a stronger person; when going through life there are some really tough times and growing up in almost nothing but tough times is ,sadly, great practice for the real world. As far back as I can remember, my dad was my favorite person because my mom was always at work so I remember him being there …show more content…
He had changed for a while but got right back onto the addiction horse and started a business of “fixing cars” in our garage while my mom was not able to walk after nearly dying in a car accident. While “fixing cars” my father was actually dealing drugs and cheating on my mom. Finally my mother decided to divorce him and he proceeded to get in a relationship with the girl he met through dealers. When trying to convince him to stop doing drugs he told me to my face that he would rather continue seeing his girlfriend and doing drugs/drinking that ever even see me and my sister

This is an autobiography comprised on how a dad’s alcoholism affects not only the author but his family. The circumstances in which you are raised have a large impact on the type of adult that you will be. Thus, how you are raised also affects how you will raise your own children and how they will grow up. What caught my attention about the writing of the autobiography was the how relatable and clear the details within the document were. For example, the first line of the story is “my father drank,” nothing more had to be said because you knew the dad was a drunk and he did not like that his father was this way.…

I could fill this statement with fluffy, extravagant language and discuss how challenging life is and have some overall theme like what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But, that hasn’t been my life. A personal statement should be true to your character and I would be lying if I wrote about how depressed I was about life and discouraged by the difficulties I faced. That’s just not my style.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Growing up I had to face a reality that most young children do not. My mother was a drug addict and her drug of choice was heroin. I was aware of her addiction from an early age; events that were commonplace in my home, I look back now as an adult and realize how wrong they were. For instance, it was made out to be a game to sort the seeds out of her marijuana. I remember being very young, possibly five or six and describing what was needed and how to shoot up heroin to my grandparents.…
