Who Is Adam Levine Dehumanize In Animals

Improved Essays
The other day I had a conversation with my girlfriend in which it was brought to my attention something that I was ignorant about. She made me realize how dehumanizing and offensive the video to the song “Animals” by Maroon 5 was. “That video is really offensive; it dehumanizes women,” my girlfriend said. That conversation I had with her left me thinking about it, so I decided to watch the video.
The video starts at a butcher shop with an attractive woman walking in to buy meat. The butcher is Adam Levine, the lead singer from Maroon 5. After the visit from the woman to the butcher shop, Levine gets obsessed with her and he starts stalking the woman. He takes pictures of her while he follows her everywhere. If that’s not scary enough, he even sneaks into her house while she is asleep to lie down next to her and watch her sleep. In the video Levine fantasizes about having sex with the woman while soaked in blood. The video is rather graphic. This video is not one you would see in MTV or any music video channel at all, it seems more to me like something a “Dexter” episode would show.

I would think he is because throughout the whole video it is symbolized many times. The fact that in the video Levine is a butcher says a lot. At one point in the video Levine is in a dark room revealing the photographs he has taken while following the woman, in this room there are large animal corpses hooked and hanging from the ceiling. It’s like he is waiting for the right moment to do what he is planning on doing to her and just adding her to his list. She will just be another one from the many. This further portrays women in this video as just being prey. Are women just pieces of meat? Are they possessions, just something to be used? I don’t think so and in my opinion this video is implying

I like how you start out with the statement that the video is a 'problem-solution argument'. With that, it establishes the tone in which you will critic the video and its argument. You provide historical backing to the statement that you provide in the first paragraph, which opens the reads eyes on how recent it was when women's did not have any rights and how far they have come in just a little under a century. You make the connection from the cult of domesticity to women's voting rights in a very professional manner. You establish evidence that the phrase "like a girl" is still being used in today's schooling systems in a rather offensive way.…

Sexism in the Society In the 1940s women were not looked at as equal to men. Men were the ones who were supposed to work while the women were meant to clean the home, care for the children, and make dinner. Men were not able to see that women are just as capable of working in factories as men are. In the 1940s training video supervising women workers, Joe’s attitude, Mr. Brook’s attitude, and the women’s reactions reveal the sexist attitudes of the time period.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

The article, “Men, Masculinities, and Feminism” explains that men can be privileged in society but still lose privilege because of certain characteristics that oppress them. The authors, Christopher J. Greig and Barbara A. Pollard (2017) elaborate this explaining that even though men have power based on their gender, their privilege is challenged and ranked within their sex. This can be seen by a social hierarchy that oppresses those who aren’t considered to be as masculine as other Men. Men are pressured by other men to perform actions that are masculine, such as displaying dominance by being aggressive, to secure a higher status. Throughout their life, they are constantly fighting to prove their masculine standing in society so that they…

Yo bro, we’re learning about this crazy argument in my philosophy class, it is about animal equality. In, Animal Liberation, Peter Singer argues that we should extend the same rights and equality of human beings to non humans; animals. He does not make this claim meaning animals are equal in abilities, opportunities, or their logic towards life. Also, if he achieves his claim he does not agree to have equal rights towards animals. Peter Singer argues for equal consideration.…

Lily Allen’s “Hard Out Here” it is a work of light satire which mocks modern day consumerism and stereotypical society’s views of women in media. In her music video Allen immediately points out a few of society’s views on consumerism. In her first lines she used a very common term from society which from a misogynistic background, is used to describe a female and continues on with a list of other common stereotypes such as women in the kitchen, in media it is all about materialistic possessions instead of personality, the double standards of society, and plenty more. In her second verse Allen takes on the voice of “the society in which we live in” and she tells all the women that they need to be a size six, being from the U.K. this is the equivalent to a size two in the U.S. Women need to be perfect wife material or they will end up alone, is basically where this verse is going. This where the satirical aspect of the song lies, she mocks the stereotypical view of what wife material is and inflates it to a higher level, she says that women need to be thin, attractive, rich or a great cook, and have someone to objectify you as a trophy to live a good life.…

After viewing the documentary of “Miss Representation” I found that the message this documentary was sending its viewers was that the media sells the idea that women are visualized and praised for their beauty, sexuality and youth rather than their intellectualism and leadership skills. “Miss Representation” exposes the ugly truth behind the media and politics towards women. I found this documentary to be persuasive and successful in bringing awareness to both men and women, of what the “normal “everyday women goes through and the pressure they attain because of the media by the following supported claims. This documentary highlights the importance of what is advertised through the media and how it affects us, the many different statistics…

Growing up, I never felt segregated based on my gender. I was always treated the same and given the same options as the boys were. It wasn’t until later in high school and college where I started noticing gender differences within society. The “glass ceiling” was clearly evident in the business world, but I’m not fully exposed to that, being that I’m still in school. The history of gender inequality, on the other hand, was something I was completely unfamiliar with.…

The tone of the song is very upbeat and therefore contradicts with the entire analysis of the lyrics. As an audience, it can be inferred that Swift uses this cheery tone to make it seem just like all of the other tunes in todays pop culture. As soon as the music video begins, the audience is introduced to the male that Swift is in relations with. He is seen getting out of a fancy and rare car; this makes him seem just as fancy and rare as his car. The next scene displays Taylor Swift in bed with her breakfast laying next to her and a cat draped on her hand.…

The advancement of technology has made it easier than ever for people to keep in touch with distant friends and relatives as well as making it easier to communicate with people. One downside of this technological advancement has been the ease to which the media outlets can broadcast their messages and just how saturated our forms of entertainment have become with ideas on what is to be expected of people in society based on their gender. Some of these ideas are subtle and are conveyed with subconscious imagery used to perpetuate the objectification of women such as women dressed in provocative clothing or behaving in ways that indicates they desire to be viewed as sexual objects. Other ideas are obviously shown when the majority of women in television or movies are displayed as being submissive to the dominance of their male counterparts be it as a wife taking orders form her on-screen husband or with a female employee taking the direction of her male supervisor despite the obviously wrong direction that he is leading her. These mentalities created and perpetuated by the media have lead to the hypersexualization of women, especially in movies and television programs.…

Lyrics like “My persuasion can build a nation” and “You will do anything for me” cast women in an inactive role even though they are supposedly in control. Rather than actually building a nation or doing things for themselves, these lyrics imply that women simply “persuade” others (presumably men) to do their bidding. This focus on passiveness comes from emphasized femininity, which stresses compliance and inaction for women (Williams Lecture, 10/20/15). The video also presents traditional stereotypes for men. The men of the rival group are dressed in military garb and wield weapons, representing the glorification of violence associated with hyper-masculinity.…
