Good morning fellow aspiring directors, I’m here today from the Australian Film School and will be discussing the well known play Othello by Shakespeare, the play to this day is still very relevant, Shakespeare has done this by incorporating the themes jealousy, appearance and reality and racism which still occurs in our society today and can often appear in our day to day life. By including these themes in the play it keeps the relationship with the now modern audience despite the original plays age. This is seen in Geoffrey Sax’s 2001 film Othello, where Geoffrey has appropriated the film following the original plot but has changed many aspects of Shakespeare’s Othello to suit todays audience, while keeping the themes showing the same universal…
hero is made by his good qualities and his/her passion of being a good human being but some of these fine humans had to loose in the storyline world of Shakespeare due to the great and catchy idea called “tragedy”. As known by the modern world, Shakespeare has made tales and stories of tragic heroes which have left a great mark on today’s modern world. . One of these stories is known by the name of ‘Othello’ which is written by William Shakespeare. Othello is supposedly driven by the author to become a tragic hero; understandingly by these points which are that the fallacies and hoaxed stories (Desdemona proclaimingly betrayed Othello in many ways and vice-versa) wee made, there are liers and evil plotters in society like Iago, Othello…
The references towards Othello having a different appearance than the Venetian men creates a feeling within Othello that those men are better suited for Desdemona than himself. Iago points out these fears and brings them to the forefront of Othello’s mind. While ruminating over the…
In spite of Desdemona’s devotion and loving demeanor toward her husband, Othello’s faults shine through and ultimately…
Othello’s honourable and honest-nature, integrated with his insecurity of being an outsider, racially and culturally, found him to being easily preyed upon for Iago’s ploy. As previously mentioned several times, Iago portrayed himself as an honest and loyal friend, which he employed against Othello, stating, “The Moor is of a free and open nature,/ That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,/And will tenderly be led by the nose/ As asses are” (1.3.390-393).Just as Othello was so easily deceived because of his open nature, Iago used Othello’s racial insecurity, to enhance his plot of twisting his love for his wife, Desdemona. In other words, Iago used the same tactic Brabantio, Desdemona’s father used when he found out about the secret marriage, as Iago comments, “She did deceive her father, marrying you;/ And what she seem’d to shake and fear your looks/ She lov’d them most” (3.3.208-210). Moreover, despite what it appeared to be, Iago fooled Othello, using his racial insecurity in order to question for him to question his wife’s faithfulness, when in reality, Desdemona would never be unfaithful.…
The play, Othello, by William Shakespeare, portrays many key examples of human nature through the personalities of every character. What goes deeper into the complexity of human nature is Iago and Othello’s relationship which provokes each individual to truly express their inner selves and their true capabilities. For Iago it is expressing the nature of hate and revenge whereas for Othello it is the gradual change from a good natured man into a bad with the help of Iago’s wicked ways. The deceitful relationship between Iago and Othello shows us how we as humans easily tend to let something as small as single emotion of jealousy provoke such an overblown and unreasonable revenge due to the deeper complexity of human nature.…
In the play Othello main inner struggle with his relationship with Desdemona, that he is an outsider in a mainly white population in Venice. Desdemona’s fatter thinks he should not have married Desdemona. That Desdemona should have married someone with the same status similar Roderigo. Othello felt insecure being black, which led him to believe Desdemona would never stay true to him. In his mind, he always thought he was in battle.…
Nevertheless, the film is more sexually charged with explicit scenes between Othello and Desdemona than Shakespeare’s scenes expressing their relationship. Parker’s use of theatrical special effects helps the viewer better imagine what haunts Othello after Iago plants the seed of infidelity into play. Visually seeing Desdemona naked with Cassio in a fantasy dream sequence does not seem as unimaginable as when reading the tragedy. “Though he has stayed true to period and character, Parker makes explicit what Shakespeare left to the imagination” (Gerstel, 1995). The direct to the camera soliloquies given by Iago helps the viewer better understand where he is mentally and witness the disdain he feels towards Othello for choosing Cassio over him for lieutenant.…
Machiavelli’s Prince seeks to recruit and educate a ruler in the art of ruling. His ideal rulers are founders, men who created a fatherland and were not afraid to sacrifice lives and their self-interests for the common good. Machiavelli stresses that a ruler needs to appear virtuous while using vices when necessary to achieve positive results. Machiavelli teaches the ruler to divide his self. “It is essential, therefore, for a Prince […] to have learned how to be other than good, and to use or not use his goodness as necessity requires” (Machiavelli, 40).…
William Shakespeare is one of literatures greatest writers who is best known for his sonnets and plays. One of his most famous plays is Othello. Like most of Shakespeare’s plays, Othello is a tragedy. Othello is the main character of the play who falls in love with Desdemona. Desdemona, Othello’s love interest, first began to fall in love with Othello after listening to his war stories and Othello fell in love with her because “she did pity them”(Act 1, Scene3). Desdemona is accused of having an affair with Cassio, Othello’s Lieutenant, by Iago for reasons not disclosed by Shakespeare. Throughout the play her goodness and loyalty to Othello is steadily revealed especially in the end. In the beginning of the play she openly admits to her great loyalty to Othello when she chooses him over her own father, “I do perceive here a divided duty……
Act I Prompt In the play Othello, by William Shakespeare, Iago appears to be evil, very clever, and ruthless when manipulating other characters and using their weaknesses to his advantage. In the beginning of Act I, Scene i, Iago’s personality begins to show when he convinces Roderigo to inform Brabantio of his daughter’s secret marriage with a moor named Othello. Iago demands for Roderigo to, “Chase after Othello and ruin his joy, mock him in the streets…”(1.1.70-71).…
Throughout literature, authors manipulate their characters in certain manners to help the audience discover their identities and their personalities. One way that Shakespeare presents Iago’s character in Othello is through Iago’s sacrifices throughout the play. Shakespeare communicates Iago’s pure craving of revenge through what Iago is willing to give up. Iago is willing to sacrifice all the honor that is and could ever be associated with his name for the simple idea of Othello’s downfall.…
Different characters in Othello give us distinct edification. First of all, Desdemona tells us that we should not only love someone, but also love them in a smart way. Just like Emilia, she loves Iago, but she still reveals the vice of Iago even her life will be taken away. “EMILIA: She give it Cassio?…
Just as quick as the wind changes the sea, a man’s word can change another man’s direction just as rapidly. This fits quite well with the way Michael Cassio is portrayed throughout Shakespeare’s tragic play, Othello. Throughout the story, Cassio is shaped and explained by three things: his military service, his orderly personality, and his charisma with women. As people and things begin to manipulate Michael, things get a little complicated and threaten Michael’s position as Othello’s lieutenant.…
