Abraham Lincoln
When people think of an American hero the first people that should stick out is some of our political leaders. One of the most famous political leaders today is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, he is known for the Gettysburg Address, and getting rid of slavery for he was the president of the union during the Civil war.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was born in a log cabin in Hardin county Kentucky. His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln had an older sister Sarah and a younger brother Thomas, who died in infancy.(whitehouse.gov) Lincoln and his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana in 1817. When Lincoln was 9 years old his mother died of tremotol. This was devastating to him, he soon took responsibilities on the farm as a young man. When they moved he struck out on his own. At the age of 22 and 6 ft 4 in tall, he was rawboned and lanky, but still muscular and physically strong. Lincoln went on to be a shopkeeper, postmaster, and eventually moved his way up to a store owner.(whitehouse.gov) Lincoln began his political career in 1834 when he became one of the state's legislature for Illinois. In 1837 Lincoln became a lawyer by teaching himself the work of law. Lincoln later on became interested in Anne Rutledge, but before they had the chance to marry, she died of typhoid
