Who Is Abigail Responsible In The Crucible

In the first two acts of The Crucible, it is clear to say that Abigail Williams was the most untrustworthy character. She is the one who bears most of the responsibility for these trials. From the moment she was caught dancing in the forest, she had lied to the Reverend and others in order to keep her affair with John Proctor hidden. She hides her behaviors about that night so that she wouldn’t be accused of casting a spell on Elizabeth Proctor. When she along with the other girls are caught in the forest, Abigail knows she will have to get herself out of being accused of witchcraft. She is smart in knowing that if she threatens the other girls about keeping quiet then she wouldn’t have to fear being accused. “I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you…I can make you wish you had never see the sun go down” (19). Once Tituba has confessed, Abigail knows how to deceive the people, she then confesses to having seen the devil conspiring with other people in the town. This would be the beginning of Abigail leading the girls into accusing innocent people of witchcraft. I would state that Abigail would …show more content…
Because I cannot have another in my life. Because I lie and sign myself to lies. Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang. How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave my name” (133). In regards to the decision John Proctor made, I believe he made a wise decision to preserve his name and risk losing his life for it. I believe that he would have lived a life of torment from the people, he may have been outcasted and rejected. He feared his sons may never respect him anymore. I believe he made a good decision to die with honor than having to live a life in shame. He knew that he wanted to preserve his name and reputation for religions matters and not for the public. His honor was one of the good things that came out of the Salem witch

I agree with Winona Ryder about Abigail being a villain. First, she told her friends that she would kill them if they told anyone. If she wouldn't have been guilty, she wouldn't have told them that. Abigail doesn't need power. She had to have done something realy bad in order for her to try to hide it that bad.…

While Abigail was the driving force of the plot and caused many of the horrible events in Salem, I don’t think she is entirely to blame. People are products of their environment and Abigail’s environment had shaped her into an emotional, unstable young girl. I’m sure her need for attention and love started with the death of her parents and when John Proctor betrayed her love and stayed with his wife this need reached an all-time high, driving her into a temporary insanity. In the beginning she had no intent to involve witchcraft but instead wanted everyone to forget about it. But when she saw there was no escape from it, she embraced it.…

Besides Abigail and the girls of Salem, there is more than one person at fault for the final conclusion of the play, as evident in the play, it all come back to Mercy, the nanny of Abigail and the girls. All of the chaos started in act one of the play when the girls were caught playing and dancing in the woods. Throughout this, they were supposed to be watched by their nanny Mercy, but she is always off and wondering around. Even in Act One, she was supposed to be taking care of the Putnam's daughter Ruth, but Mrs. Putnam found her snooping around Abigail's home finding out what happened, and Mrs. Putnam had to instruct her, "Mercy, you go home to Ruth, d’y’hear?" In addition, if Mercy had been watching the girls in the first place, they wouldn't…

One of the reasons why Abigail is most to blame for the witch trials is because how often Abigail makes false accusations throughout the play. Firstly, Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft right in the beginning when she told the girls that “Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam‘s dead sisters” (Act 1 Scene I). Abigail knew she would be in trouble if anyone found out what the girls were doing in the forest when the townsmen suggested to call Hale, so Abigail automatically…

The Crucible > The Red Scare “...141 people imprisoned, 19 people executed, and two more died from other causes directly related to the investigations.” (Callis, “The Aftermath of The Salem Witch Trials in Colonial America”). The Communist Red-Scare (Began in September 1945 when the U.S. and Canada thought that the Soviet Union was going to infiltrate our government with the idea of obtaining information about the atomic bomb.) and The Crucible/Salem Witch Trials (A wave of hysteria overtook the town of Salem, almost everyone, young and old, was accused of being a witch. Although she condemns innocent people to most likely death, she does not do it out of spite, but so that she is not punished. As the story progresses, Abigail enjoys her new found authority in a society that previously shunned, ignored and mistreated her. This is a completely natural reaction, as the respect she gains and the power she suddenly acquires gets into her head, and she starts to use it for herself and manipulates the village by accusing Elizabeth Proctor and anyone who disagrees with her or disbelieves her of witchcraft to get what she wants. When Mary Warren lets her conscience get to her, and nearly confesses that the accusatory acts are fraudery, Abigail accuses her of witchcraft and manipulates and bullies Mary into obeying…
