Jack is a rude leader of a group of choir boys and doesn’t care about how anyone else feels. When Jack first met Ralph and Piggy they were really nice to him and all of the choir boys, but Jack kept calling Piggy names and being very disrespectful. Ralph and Piggy invited Jack and the choir boys to join them for a meeting, but Jack didn’t want them to go. A choir boy fainted and even though the rest of the boys wanted to help him up, Jack told them to leave him alone. In the beginning of the meeting, Jack talks about getting rescued and electing a chief. “Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things… I ought to be chief,” (Golding 22). While hunting pigs, Jack thinks that the pigs can see him, so he disguised himself. He grabbed a bunch of stuff and made a painted mask. When he puts on the mask, his savage side comes out and he is ready to hunt and kill. He takes it to the next level and kills a sow. When Roger kills Piggy, Jack immediately starts talking to Ralph. “See, see, that’s what you get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore-I’m chief,” (181). Saying he’s chief implies that he is challenging authority. Since his tribe has killed someone, Jack thinks that he won; he’s chief, and can do anything he wants on the island.
