1. Who invented the electric chair? Alfred P. Southwick invented the electric chair. In 1877, Edison began a series of bizarre experiments at his West Orange lab, shocking unwanted dogs, cats and even a circus elephant to death with AC to prove that the current was deadly stuff. In the 1880s, the dentist Alfred P. Southwick was inspired by a drunken man he saw accidentally electrocuted to death, to develop a new quick and painless method for the execution of death sentenced people as an alternative to hanging in the United States. The chair itself was designed by Carl F. Adams as Southwick was not the builder. His device for electrical execution appeared in the form of an electric chair since he was a dentist who used to perform surgeries on patients sitting on the dental chair. The first law allowing the use of the electric chair came into effect on January 1, 1889. William Kemmler was the first to be executed by electrocution on August 6, 1890. The Electric Chair was being used for over 25 years without a patent. It was first used in 1890 and many other people adopted the killing chair but it wasn’t a registered invention until 1915. The exact date was Dec. 14, 1915 which once again shows that for over 20 years the electric chair was being used with no official government recognition. Well then it wasn’t against the law to use that kind of device now and days that chair would have needed government approval before being used.

The electric chair hasn’t really changed much over the years. Well the way the chair has been changed from round to square is one of the only changes. The chair has had no real needs for changes, so why change it?
