Chris drank the alcohol for the first time when he was thirteen. He was at his friend J’s house and J’s older brother was having a party at home. He drank 3 bottles of the beer and got drank. Chris’s mother was an alcoholic, there is a genetic predisposition to become alcohol dependent. Growing up with single mom who is an alcoholic and neglect Chris might result in some psychological side effects such as depression and anxiety, then self-medicate. Hanging out with friends who abuse alcohol is definitely a leading cause of his alcoholism. Nobody choose to become an alcoholic. Chris like the fact that alcohol makes him happy, confident, and fearless which he doesn’t feel in life. He has the alcohol under controlled until things get to the point where he no longer has the control. Luckily, Jessica showed up and motivated him to get treatment when he already give up on himself. Love and care can make a difference in people’s life. One thing is very helpful for me to understand the role of sobriety is Chris’s feeling at that stage. He told me that he was in fear, insecurity all the time, and it was worse than any time in his life. I used to think that if an alcoholic makes the decision and puts efforts in, the person will get sober. I never thought about the feelings of an alcoholic has to come across the bridge. Being sober not just falls on one person, it is a teamwork. People who relapse are not coward, they need help. The world they are facing is more challenged in every way.
