He shared his experience of being an alcoholic, physically and mentally dependence on alcohol, emotional barriers of staying sober in the interview with me.
Chris drank the alcohol for the first time when he was thirteen. He was at his friend J’s house and J’s older brother was having a party at home. He drank 3 bottles of the beer and got drank. Chris’s mother was an alcoholic, there is a genetic predisposition to become alcohol dependent. Growing up with single mom who is an alcoholic and neglect Chris might result in some psychological side effects such as depression and anxiety, then self-medicate. Hanging out with friends who abuse alcohol is definitely a leading cause of his alcoholism. Nobody choose to become an alcoholic. Chris like the fact that alcohol makes him happy, confident, and fearless which he doesn’t feel in life. He has the alcohol under controlled until things get to the point where he no longer has the control. Luckily, Jessica showed up and motivated him to get treatment when he already give up on himself. Love and care can make a difference in people’s life. One thing is very helpful for me to understand the role of sobriety is Chris’s feeling at that stage. He told me that he was in fear, insecurity all the time, and it was worse than any time in his life. The reason is Gannon drinks excessively, and because his father and brother are alcoholics it seems genetics also play a factor in his addiction. Gannon is a victim of a disease, and now that he understands he has an illness, he is ready to admit his addiction and begin treatment. Gannon and I spoke of many of the psychological models of addiction, but we both have concluded and agreed that Gannon’s alcohol addiction is a learned behavior, and fits with the social learning theory of addiction. Gannon grew up in a home where he observed his father and older brother engage in excessive drinking. Gannon is repeating what he has seen for years and learned from his older brother and father.…

Today I had my first experience attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. It is not exactly what I was anticipating, in regards to the people that I was expecting to see. The first person who started speaking after the group members state their names and problem, go true the silent prayer, the 12 Steps, and the 12 Traditions stated, “alcoholics don’t look like the typical movie alcoholic and/or the stereotype people have about us, we come from different backgrounds, colors, and shapes;” it was like he was reading my mind. I was expecting to see, for the most part, older people who were tired of struggling with their lives because of alcohol, but there were young adults, males and females, older people, and even a member with his young son.…

Upon entering the room I was jovially greeted by a man with a melodious “Welcome!” There were about thirty people from all different lifestyles, huddled in the room around three long wooden tables. Men and women, some appeared jovial and others exhibited a flat effect.…

Addiction support meetings have multiple benefits beyond helping a person move toward a healthier, more stable and productive life without the misuse of substances. Historically speaking, in the case of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the idea that one alcoholic speaking with another is enough of a good start for progress toward recovery. As a matter of fact, that is how it is described in AA literature (Big Book, 2001). Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. Its primary purpose is to help alcoholics stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.…
