How Hayden Influenced My Life

Luminary “Who do you rely on most to help you succeed and why?” My feet were shaking in my towering heels, palms sweating, anxiety coursing through my veins, and I could not see clearly from the bright stage lights. This was the question that I was asked during self expression the night of Distinguished Young Women. Why was it that Hayden’s name came to my mind so quickly? Why hadn’t I said my mom? After all, that is what the judges expected me to say. That is what everyone expected me to say. But no, out of all people, I said Hayden, my older brother. Why was that my answer? It is simple; Hayden has had the absolute most profound influence in my life. For as long as I can remember, Hayden has influenced me in every aspect my life. It is no wonder to why though: he has always played an active part in my life. Being the younger sister, I followed him everywhere and wanted to be just like him. After all, every little kid wants to be like their hero. He has taught me …show more content…
He was able to be one of the top ten scholars in his class while also fulfilling all of his duties on the seminary council. I saw the hard work that this required and always strove to develop that same work ethic. I am now co-president of the seminary council and am on my way to being in the top ten of my class. If it had not been for his influence, I would not be where I am today. He has played a huge role in the success in my life. Not only has he just been the example of hard work, but he has pushed me to work hard. Whether it was waking me up at six in the morning to go running so that I was ready for volleyball season or sitting me down to study for my test, he was there. He knows what my goals are and will always pick me up and push me to keep going when I think it is getting too difficult. He pushes me harder and harder because he sees my potential and will not let me cut myself

By looking at the quotation by Richard Rodriguez, “Working class students must separate themselves from their family and their family’s values in order to succeed academically,” I will argue that students should not have to separate themselves from their love ones in order to be successful academically. There are many examples in the text that significe how parents and other love ones could motivate a student academically. In his writings, Achievement of Desire by Richard Rodriguez, Richard demonstrates how his parents and siblings played a key role of his success. His “brother and both sister were both very good students.…

He winged almost everything he did, and I unfortunately inherited that trait. But growing up, he always made me do things individually, and he never helped me with anything he knew I could figure out. By doing this, he made me learn how the world works, and how to do things on my own, and gave me something I would way rather have than being academically smart. I know common sense isn’t something that can be taught, but I think my brother played a major part in why I have so much common sense. Wether it is figuring out how to work something without instructions, or even how to run a restaurant efficiently during rush, Jason taught me how to think and figure it out.…

When I was first given this assignment, I had trouble deciding who to write the paper on. For years, I’ve fought a mental battle, trying to prevent people from influencing me— I want to have my own opinions and beliefs. But I realized that the influence didn’t need to concern views or interests. It could be about how somebody had influenced my behaviors, my coping mechanisms, my view of myself. I knew who to write my paper on.…

Whether they are good influences or bad, there is a strong correlation between the character of a person and the type of people by which they are influenced. Influences are something that every person has, whether it is purposeful or accidental. Influences are in everything, such as family and even work. In poetry, the author sometimes expresses their family dynamics through their writing, letting these dynamics shape not only their lives, but also their works. With some of these dynamics being from the Great Depression, these elements in Hayden’s works through his always working adoptive father, Clifton’s works through her deceased father, and Roethke’s works through his deceased father. Elie Wiesel, a man of many words, once said “Let us not forget, after all, that there is always a moment when the moral choice is made. Often because of one one story or one book or one person, we are able to make a different choice, a choice for humanity, for life.” Simple people which one passes carelessly everyday can change another's perspective on the way they view life forever. Though this quarter’s Legacy Project, not only have I unveiled the tortured past of a beloved relative, but I also was able to take what I have learned and put it into a media where her story – her voice – can be heard. I am now here before you to stress a topic that I find crucial in the path to adulthood: role models. Parents, teachers, celebrities, other close relatives; whomever they may be, everyone has a person who they look up to and/or shape themselves after. I am not simply implying that a mentor will help you maneuver through the dense maze of life; I am implying that they will pave the way for you, setting down the foundation where you can continue to build upon as you grow. They play a bigger factor in our lives than most people realize and the interview I conducted with my aunty helped me to be able to see their significance.…
