Love Truly Does Kill
(Who do you blame for Paul’s death?) Some people will do absolutely anything to see someone else happy. It is quite astonishing and amazing to analyze the lengths that some individuals will go through, just to provide a hint of satisfaction for anybody that they possibly can. Some people may not even realize that they are putting themselves through such an awful experience and ordeal, but they do it subconsciously because they do not quite understand their motive or reasoning. Sigmund Freud has had a major role in determining what the human mind is thinking, what it does, why it does it, etc. It is safe to say that satisfaction is a definite must when obtaining happiness and joy for some. This may or may not be something that she knowingly does, and more likely than not she does not actually realize the profound affect her actions are having upon her child. It is actually possible through the socio-economic view, as well as inevitable, that you will damage your kid and not even realize it, and neither will they. The characters in the story thought that they heard the house telling them “There must be more money! There must be more money!” (The Rocking Horse Winner, Page 1248) This is locked into the mind of Paul and he asserts himself to be the one to accomplish this. His mother also states to him that “…we’re the poor members of the family…” and “it’s because your father has no luck.” (The Rocking Horse Winner, Page 1248) this reverberates in the mind of Paul, and his perception of his family is completely warped. In reality, the family is not actually broke, poor, or in poverty. They are upper/middle class but the mother has tremendous amounts of greed that she just cannot overcome, so no amount of money is ever satisfying to her. Paul is much too young to understand this, and all he understands is that his mother is not happy at all and is miserable. The mother has damaged her son so much, and neither of them realize it yet. The reader can clearly see what is happening, but definitely not the characters in the story. This can all tie back …show more content…
Paul has gathered that his mom does not love his father because he is unlucky and does not provide her with enough money. Paul also feels as if his own mother does not even love him so he is going to be lucky and rich and maybe then she will love him the way he wishes to be loved. Paul became obsessed with this idea because he loved his mom so much and only wanted to see her happy. He spent as much time as he could rocking on his rocking-horse predicting the names of the winning horses for the upcoming race. This talent of his was expounded upon and used drastically by many members of Paul’s family. Granted what actually killed Paul was him rocking on his rocking-horse way too much and ending up falling off of it with exhaustion. He fell very ill for three days and was stressed and wanted to know the results of the race. Once he had found out what the results were, he died right then and there. He had won his mother bucko bucks, but was it honestly all worth it when you look at the price she had to pay for her “wealth” that she basically already had. In order to love, one must be loved first is a common saying, but one that I strongly disagree with because Paul’s mother was loved so much by Paul that he unknowingly gave his life for her and yet she still did not necessarily love him, especially in Paul’s eyes.
