From one week to the next, the Saints have juggled Marcus Murphy, Tommylee Lewis, Cadet, Byrd and even Hightower to field kickoffs and punts. How likely would anyone be able to break long returns if they do not work with the blockers on a consistent basis? Flashes of potential from Murphy and Lewis have been combined with flashes of inconsistency. But, how can a young returner show any progress if Payton "yanks" them at any hint of "costing the team a turnover"? This, I can understand to a point. Murphy has not created a turnover this season. Yet, Payton chose to replace him because "he allowed the ball to hit the turf." Mark Ingram fumbled twice and was replaced with Hightower. Drew Brees has thrown 14 interceptions and fumbled four times. Where is the benching of Brees? Or, has there been any disciplining of Brees by Payton on the sidelines? Most likely, no. I would not bench Brees, however, the inconsistency in his disciplinary actions are glaring.
Is Sean Payton a good head coach? What does his record say? It spoke of success early in his career as the Saints Head Coach, but, what about today? 19 wins out of 45 games in 3 years is not a winning formula as a head coach. Many have been fired with more wins. The question will be if Payton can direct the Saints to an 8-8 record instead of delivering the third straight 7-9 record. Or worse, 5-11 or 6-10. Is he willing to allow Pete Carmichael
