Who am I now? Is a question that is always rolling around at the back of my mind. The answer is one that changes frequently due to unintentional and intentional changes to myself. At this current moment, I would say that I am someone who pretends, not always successfully, to have everything together in the murky waters of early adulthood. I pride myself in my independence, but enjoy the company of others who bring humor and joy to my life. I am someone who grew up in a small-town that often hid the injustices and varying thoughts and ideas that occurred outside of its three stoplights. I believe that this strength of mine will be beneficial to me as a nurse seeing as I will want to provide my patients with the best care possible. At the same time, this strength of mine could be something that might eventually leads me to become burnt out. According to Sheldon (2009), “when nurses continue to help and work with patients without caring for themselves, they become at risk for burnout” (p. 21). I will need to be wary of such a thing and make sure that I always keep myself in mind. Compassion is another characteristic I pride myself in having. According to Sheldon (2009), “compassion has been defined as a feeling of deep sympathy or desire to understand an experience accompanied by a desire to relieve suffering” (p. 20). This desire to understand the experience of the other is a quality all nurse should have, and one that is always worked on for improvement. To truly be able to provide a patient with the best care possible the nurse must attempt to see what life is like through the patient’s eyes. In Fundamentals of Nursing Potter and Perry (2005) discuss how, “ as a result of the infectious process, client’s body images are altered.
