I believe that this strength of mine will be beneficial to me as a nurse seeing as I will want to provide my patients with the best care possible. At the same time, this strength of mine could be something that might eventually leads me to become burnt out. According to Sheldon (2009), “when nurses continue to help and work with patients without caring for themselves, they become at risk for burnout” (p. 21). I will need to be wary of such a thing and make sure that I always keep myself in mind. Compassion is another characteristic I pride myself in having. According to Sheldon (2009), “compassion has been defined as a feeling of deep sympathy or desire to understand an experience accompanied by a desire to relieve suffering” (p. 20). This desire to understand the experience of the other is a quality all nurse should have, and one that is always worked on for improvement. To truly be able to provide a patient with the best care possible the nurse must attempt to see what life is like through the patient’s eyes.
