At the age 17 Whitney Houston was a model and became the first African American to be featured on the cover 17 times. She also appeared in many TV show like ‘Gimme a Break’. In a night cub she was signed to Arista Records’ at age 19. For the next few years the president Clive Davis was assembling lyricists and producers to balance her gospel-like sound with contemporary melodies. Her first debut album gradually became the number one selling album of her career. She received numerous accolades and toured sold-out concerts in the U.S. and Europe. Throughout the late 1980s her hits sky rocketed to the top of billboard charts. She reached a record of seven consecutive number one hits. She also became the first woman to produce four number-one singles from one album.
