Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born August 9th, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey. She was the youngest of 3. Her parents are John Houston and Emily "Cissy" Houston. Her mom was a Grammy-award-winning gospel singer and her godmother was Aretha Franklin and her cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick were also singers, as well as her other godmother, Darlene Love so she knew singing and was born for it . At age 11 she started performing in her church’s gospel choir as a soloist and learned to play the piano. She took voice lessons from her mother, with whom she would occasionally perform in nightclubs. At the age of 14 she was a backup singer for Michael Zager Band’s single ‘Life’s a Party’ and the following year she sang on Chaka Khan’s single ‘I’m Every …show more content…
At the age 17 Whitney Houston was a model and became the first African American to be featured on the cover 17 times. She also appeared in many TV show like ‘Gimme a Break’. In a night cub she was signed to Arista Records’ at age 19. For the next few years the president Clive Davis was assembling lyricists and producers to balance her gospel-like sound with contemporary melodies. Her first debut album gradually became the number one selling album of her career. She received numerous accolades and toured sold-out concerts in the U.S. and Europe. Throughout the late 1980s her hits sky rocketed to the top of billboard charts. She reached a record of seven consecutive number one hits. She also became the first woman to produce four number-one singles from one album. In 1991, while an acting career had a good chance to take off with her decision with taking or leaving the lead role in ‘The Bodyguard’, she performed her legendary rendition of the national anthem at the ‘Super Bowl’. In 1992, she married singer Bobby Brown, who she had met a few years before. She accepted the role in ‘The Bodyguard’. By 1993, she was at the pinnacle of her career. She went on to star in and produce several hit movies like, ‘Waiting to Exhale, ‘The Preacher’s Wife’, and ‘Sparkle’ She has won over 400 awards including, six ‘Grammys’, two ‘Emmys’, ‘30 Billboard Music Awards’, and 22 ‘American Music Awards’ in her singing and acting career the ‘Guinness World Records’ also cited her as the most awarded female musician of all time. She is the only woman to have more than one album spend at least ten weeks at No.one. She had three including ‘Whitney Houston’, ‘Whitney’, and ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack. She fought a long battle with drug and alcohol abuse and in 2011 she entered rehab twice and enrolled in 3 different outpatient programs. While trying to become she supported several organizations for children. The ‘Whitney Foundation for Children’ continues her work and legacy. She also supported ‘Hearing and Language Disorder Clinic’ of ‘The National Birth Defect Center’ so they renamed it as ‘Whitney Houston Hearing and Language Disorder Clinic’.
