It’s almost time. Whitney’s 200 meter relay race is next. Her heart pounds inside her chest, waiting. The first race is now done and it’s time for Whitney and her team to go. The first person of the team steps up onto the block. Whitney can hear the announcer saying “Step up. Take your mark. Go!” The first person jumps in the water and the race has begun. She swims faster and faster. The next person waits patiently to go, and as soon as the first one hits the wall, the next one jumps in. Its’s finally Whitney’s turn.
She steps up onto the rough, white, starting block for her turn in the relay, and fixes her goggles that are suffocating her face. She can feel her suit pressing tightly on her body as she stares at the turquoise water and watches the smooth, black tiles on the bottom. She waits patiently. Kicking and moving speedily across the water. Now she’s nearing the first wall. She flips around and turns, now on the last stretch. Whitney muscles are burning in pain, she’s starting to slow down, and her brain is telling her to stop and just quit, yet she keeps on going. She tells herself “You’re almost there, you can do this.” Thinking of her team, and how much they are depending on her, she keeps on fighting. She’s coming closer to the end and can see the finish. Pushing, kicking, hardly breathing, and trying as fast as she can to get there. Then finally, as though it had taken 100 years, she hits the wall.
Whitney pulls herself out of the pool and her friends and family rush to meet her. They all give her a big hug and tell her about how well she did, and how proud of her they are. She smiles and tells her teammates good job. As she walks back to the bleachers her friends tell her, “You were amazing! You did so well!” “Thanks!” She replied, “All I can say is I did my best and that’s all I can
