Henry has a very unique writing style, he uses a lot of irony. After 20 Years: two men agree to meet at a specific location after being apart for twenty years. " You've been arrested for ten minutes, 'Silky Bob'" ( page 228 ). This quotes helps prove my point, because the readers do not think that Jimmy Wells will turn in Silky Bob because Bob describes Jimmy as a very good man so readers think he will be loyal to his friend. It is a captivating story line with irony of Jimmy turning in his criminal friend. Another example O. Henry using irony is in the short story The Gift of The Magi. In this short story a wife and a husband try to get each other nice gifts for Christmas. " for lay The Combs- the combs that Della had seen in a shop window." " And now they were hers, but her hair was gone. " ( page 4 ). " Della held the watch chain in her hand and sat near the door when he always entered" ( page 3 ). The wife sold all her hair to buy her husband a watch chain, and her husband sold his watch to buy her a hair comb. The irony happens at the end of the story when the reader thinks that Della ( the wife ) is doing a sweet and thoughtful deed, until they learn that the husband sold his watch and so both of their gifts become useless to both of them. This maybe connects to the world because some people put others before

Irony is found throughout this whole short story by Flannery O’Conner. As the grandmother is pleading out for her life to the Misfit, she tells him “I know you’re a good man at heart. I can just look at you and tell.” This is ironic because she knew he was not a good man at heart. The grandmother was just trying to say anything to the Misfit so he would not kill her.…

Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

The second example of Irony is within this statement in the text. “I rather recommend buying the children alive and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs.” Swift compares the Irish to animals, and society should not treat them in such a manner; as animals instead of living human beings. The contradiction between what the reader expects and what really happens at the close of the story is situational irony. In the Gift Of The Magi, an example is when Jim comes home from work and sees Della’s short hair. The fact that he purchased hair combs for Della shows that he did not expect her to sell her hair.…
