The Media Action for Asian Americans aims to help Asian American actors who work in film to advocate their rights as actors in films. This organization has had different campaigns in order to protect the rights of Asian Americans and to denounce those that are seen as offensive to Asian Americans. MANAA’s campaigns have reached the press and have been posted about. MANAA’s most recent criticism is their comments on Aloha, a film that is criticized widely for its incredible amount of whitewashing. MANAA (2015) gave fault to the Cameron Crowe film and shamed it for its evident whitewashing on the Asian/Pacific Islanders. Majority of the characters in the film are played by white people when according to MANAA’s Founding President, 60% of Hawaiian’s population composes of Asian American and Pacific Islanders. The denunciation of this film reached BBC News (2015) and was posted about on their website. While there are many people that are still unaware of the severity of whitewashing in Hollywood films, these posts and harsh comments given on whitewashing in Hollywood films do have an effect on how people see movies and really educate the uneducated on this
