In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. Dr. Ellis Ford Hartford (1905-present) is a 1947 graduate of the University of Kentucky, former Dean of the University school, and Dean of the community college system. Hartford began his education at Kentucky Wesleyan but after an injury pertaining to sports he decided to drop school and begin working at an oil refinery near Hammond and Gary, Indiana. Not long after he’d begun, he decided to instead move back to Kentucky where he received his teaching certificate at the Bowling Green State Normal School. Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. With Veterans Memorial High School opening up towards the beginning of my sophomore year; it put multiple kids from different background together into one school. In the origination of the school, it was quite difficult to put aside the previous student body loyalties, biases, and come together to create something worth lasting which has never happened before. Even though everyone who goes to Shakopee High School knows about this situation, they do not know how much it has significantly affected my life. My life changed last year in so many ways. In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. The last day of seventh grade at cooper middle school it was viable everyone was stoked to be going home or wherever they were going after school. Everyone was looking at the clock to see the time. Then the bell rang everyone started running as if there lives were at stake. Then the buss lines were packed it was clear people were struggling to stay in the line as everyone was pushing and shoving to get good sets on the buss.
