In the Light of Hip-Hop American culture has been driven in various directions fueled by different trends which have captivated the minds and hearts of millions of people. One trend, which is a music genre, has given rise to controversy and heated debates on whether it is a good or bad influence. Hip-Hop music has changed the American culture and its effects have reached extensive grounds universally. As the Hip-Hop music started to become an important aspect of American culture, it was not understood by many and some even thought of the music as objectionable. In the article, "Hip Hop Planet," James McBride speaks about the rising impact of Hip-Hop music which he had been ignorant towards for many years since he perceived the music to be irritating.…
I enjoyed reading the book Hidden Figures because it taught me about how women of colour were treated back in the olden days. The book was fantastic, it unlocked our deep feelings and thoughts we have of our future about our jobs and dreams. Hidden Figures shows us to never give up and neither underestimate people, especially women. I will always remember that even people didn’t take them seriously at first, Katherine, Marry and Dorothee were the ones who changed NASA’s history. One thing I liked about the book was, how the characters in the book wanted to change their lives and instead changed the history.…
The society that was the 1940s and 1950s in the United States was an entirely different world than modern day. From the way children were raised to politics and the state of the economy, the differences became more apparent as I interviewed two of my grandparents. The insights I gained from my knowledgeable grandparents allowed me to view the society we are currently living in with a much different, refined point of view. Biographies Beginning with my grandfather, Peter Muehr, my mom’s father, I was eager to absorb his viewpoint of the culture in which he was raised.…
I believe the emergence of rock and roll changed U.S. culture by influencing our everyday attire, makeup, and language. The rock and roll age consisted of leather jackets, boots, darker shades of makeup, and maybe even some provocative language. Our way of life revolves around men. Our society believes men overpower women in everything. I feel like this caused women to shy away from ever trying new things such as a musical career.…
Cultural Hijacking: The Commercialization of the Hip Hop Genre Ever since the formative years of the recorded music industry, Africana artists have played a major role in shaping some of the most influential music genres of the 20th century. Jazz, blues, and hip hop, to name a few, would not exist in the current state that they do today had it not been for all of the great artists who overcame racial intolerance and segregation through their art. Unfortunately, the period of social consciousness within musical entertainment has passed and an era of ignorance being spread through popular music has transpired in its place.…
Today’s Black Woman: Stereotypically Black For as long as i have been alive I have seen people do what the see. Most humans are incapable or refuse to do their own things or have an original thought. Television of today plays a key role in the society of today. It has the power to change minds create peace or chaos and deliver a message.…
The music industry is a major media institution that is widely influential in the way that people perceive their surroundings and how they experience discrimination and oppression within society. Popular media, such as music, acts as a catalyst for social construction (Glantz 3). Whether by way of radio, MP3 downloads, or music videos, people throughout the country, and all over the world are exposed to dominant ideologies through music that shape their thoughts and behaviors. One specific genre of music that is guilty of discriminatory and oppressive messages, yet might be slightly unexpected, is country music. “Country music is often labeled conservative, which makes it seem innocent and wholesome” (Rogers).…
I am an African -American young black women. I grew up around all types of music, but mostly R&B, Hip-Pop, and Rap. Hip-Pop and R&B music is mostly played at my family’s get together such as, parties, family reunions, and cookouts. I listen to Rap music when I’m at a party with friends or just hanging out by myself. Rap music can relate to an everyday life situation, but if you really listen to it you can see how it affects and disrespect our women.…
Throughout this passage, Spillers brings in various examples of this abstract, or societal misogyny that which African women are faced. The first example explicates a sort of irrelevance that black women are presented with. This irrelevance is explicated in the opening lines of this passage, when Spillers states, “Let’s face it. I am a marked woman, but not everybody knows my name… I describe a locus of confounded identities” (65).…
According to The Library of Congress, “pop culture is cultural aspects of social life distinguished by their broad-based presence across ethnic, social, and regional groupings.” Mass Media, along with the different styles, languages and transportation, can be defined as pop culture. The idea of pop culture has been very familiar with every generation since the 1960s. Pop culture made a big impact on everyday life for all children and even adults. Pop culture was common in the 1970s, specifically in the areas of fashion, hairstyles, and toys.…
These two chapters talks about the process of black women fought for their womanhood and motherhood and how did their impact on white women. What surprised me was that black women were leading white women in the fight of gaining women’s right and changed women’s attitude on domesticity. They sent out a message that women not only can work at home taking care of family but also can go into labor force and earn money to support family. The cult of domesticity was a cage for women. They have the urge for self-actualization so that they want to join the work force as men do.…
Media is one of the biggest influences we have in society today and their constant mistreatment of women is one of the biggest issues of today. Media defined by Webster’s dictionary as “the main means of mass communication (especially television, music, radio, newspapers, and the Internet) regarded collectively”. The media is the largest method that for people to receive information about the outside world and the constant barding and discrimination only becomes obvious once people step outside their comfort zone and are willing to ask hard questions that need to be answered we can move forward in creating a better nation not just for woman but for all people. The way women are shown on television does not come just from the advertisement or the actual screen time that a women has even though those are still heavily favoring of the men epically in the news industry where women are on the broadcast news 32% if the time while men are the other 67%.…
From African Queens To Hip Hop Honeys? From Nubian queens to video vixens, black women have been subjected to sexual exploitation, degrade and prejudice throughout history. There are many forms of exploitation black women face from the slave masters to the oversexualized mass media of black women in the new generation exploitation has evolved. Malcolm X once said, “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman.…
In Janes Gaines’s, White Privilege and Looking Relations: Race and Gender in Feminist Film Theory, Gaines wanted to show how a theory of the text and its spectator, based on the psychoanalytic concept of sexual difference, is unequipped to deal with a film which is about racial difference and sexuality. “The Diana Ross star vehicle Mahogany (directed by Berry Gordy, 1975) immediately suggests a psychoanalytic approach because the narrative is organized around the connections between voyeurism and photographic acts, because it exemplifies the classical cinema which has been so fully theorized in Lacanian terms” (Gaines, 12). But as Gaines argued, the psychoanalytic model works to block out considerations which assume a different configuration…
It is to say with certainty that in today’s society, pop culture has a pronounced influence on our everyday lives and the decisions that we make. Although we may not like to admit it, pop culture largely assists in shaping the type of men/women we grow up to be. With young children being the primary target of pop culture, it is clearly evident how it can significantly impact the way in which we respond to different stimuli. While pop culture is commonly accepted worldwide it is uncertain if the feminist movement should embrace it or not. It is important to acknowledge that pop culture has a manipulation factor that most people don’t take into account.…
