“The Chinese divided the celestial sphere into four quarters” (Green 39). The Vermilion Bird and Black Tortoise ruled the South and North, the White Tiger ruled the West that “corresponds to autumn and snowy mountains” (Chia 144) and the Azure Dragon ruled the East. All totems symbolize something different and the white tiger, for example, “exemplifies bravery and strength” (144) it is said to be “the king of all animals and [the] lord of the mountains” (144).
Its white colour is so seldom, that it gains attention of everyone, whether negative or positive. On the one hand, white animals are venerated by some, mainly Eastern cultures as the Indian and Chinese; on the other hand cultures might despise them regarding human albinos.
The “positive [and] negative aspects of white [and] black” (Cirlot 59) are combined in one animal. The colour white, for example, which is presented in the fur of the tiger, could stand for day, the black stripes for night, and its blue eyes for the one in between white and black, between day and night.
