Why had she said Captain Charlie Durham? That was a downright lie. False as her own white teeth. Clara was smarter than Captain Charlie Durham. Hortense was smarter than Captain Charlie Durham. Probably even Grandma Ambrosia was smarter than Captain Charlie Durham. Captain Charlie Durham wasn’t smart. He had thought he was, but he wasn’t. He sacrificed a thousand people because he wanted to save one woman he never really knew. Captain Charlie Durham was a no-good djam fool bwoy” (Smith 294). There are many different literary devices in this quote. There is a simile when it says “False as her own white teeth”. There is colloquialism when it says “djam” and “bwoy”. Also, there is hyperbole when it says “He sacrificed a thousand people because he wanted to save one woman he never really knew”. Lastly, there is characterization when in the quote, it is describing how smart Captain Charlie Durham is. I chose this quote because it has many different literary devices and it shows how a lot of the novel was written. This quote is important to understanding the book because it portrays how the book is written and how confusing it is at a first glimpse. The mood in the passage is how confused and angry Clara was at herself after she had said something that she should have. She was even questioning herself when it says “Why had she said Captain Charlie Durham. The tone in the passage is that the narrator is describing Clara as frustrated and angry when it literally says “As the front door closed behind her, Clara bit her own lip once more, this time in frustration and anger”. It makes the reader understand how she created a misconception for other people and how she explained the wrong thing when she wasn’t aware of what she was

In Tim Wise’s book “White Like Me Reflections on Race from a Privileged son” (2011), Wise tackles the controversial topic of white privilege and how racial identity and whiteness here in America shape the overall lives of white Americans and adversely affect people of color. He entwines stories from his own life experiences from birth to present to make it both an easy read and relatable. Wise explains exactly what white privilege means and how this privilege is systematically embedded into American society and because of this, racism and racial disparities are rampant. He writes this book, not for those people of color, as they already know and understand the effects that whiteness (or lack thereof) has on their lives; but he writes for his…

“As a white person, I realized I had been taught about racism as something which puts others at a disadvantage, but had been taught not to see one of its corollary aspects, white privilege, which puts me at an advantage” (McIntosh, p. 55). Growing up white, I was never taught or shown that being white had “advantages” over other races. However, I started to notice these advantages in middle school. My middle school, Arts Impact Middle School in downtown Columbus, was 76.8% black and 11.2% white. Because my school was predominately black, it opened my eyes to things my peers were going through that I might never go through.…

Which that would have been racism, not this construct of “white privilege”. “White Privilege” does not judge people off of actions, words, deeds, and character, “white privilege” within itself is racist. “White Privilege” also means if there's any great difference in income between a white person and a “person of color” that the government should step in and forcibly eliminate the disparity.…

The movie Corpse Bride is a very charming yet macabre movie of how a shy, stumbling young man accidently marries a deceased bride. This movie is done by stop motion, yet is still very elegantly. With the grim aesthetic of the Victorian era, the living world is shown to be dull, gray, and practically lifeless while the Land of the Dead is full of color, and lively characters. The detail of every character and object is rich with also a grand orchestra, soft piano and jazz numbers to company.…
