In this scene, Max asked Bigger if he liked going to church, and what his thoughts were about it. Bigger’s mother is very religious so the family attended church often. When they went to the African American church, they sang and prayed like everybody else. However, Bigger said that he didn’t like going to church so he stopped going. Bigger believes that praying doesn’t change anything, because the “colored folks” don’t have anything and “the white folks got everything”. This scene is important because we learn about Bigger’s character and how he is very realistic. He doesn’t believe in any special power that can change his life by praying.
