Throughout history there have been various instances of racism; slavery, segregation and the Nazi regime as some examples. All of these occurrences had one thing in common which was that there were led by individuals with white skin. In the beginning of history, as well as some times today, people of colour were viewed and treated differently. People of colour were illustrated as savage or unciviliazed. Although racism seemed to be depleting over the years, there are still many examples of racism today. The issue is that no matter how much society seems to be advancing, racisim and white supremacy continues to exist. Nowadays white privilege presents itself more discreetly. People become famous by gaining respect and popularity of an audience as they show their talents. There are many instances where celebrities are found culturally appropriating. On numerous occasions when an artist or actor of white background is culturally appropriating it is often considered acceptable, however, when a celebrity of colour uses the same kind of thing, they are criticized. An example of this is Kylie Jenner who is an 18 year old white teenager. When she is seen styling cornrows people often label her as ‘chic’ as opposed to Ciara who is a black R&B singer, and is marked as ‘ghetto’ It’s obvious that white privilege is present and exemplified by cultural appropriation in society when people commonly use the phrase “White girls do it better.”. Jenner also gained fame when the “Kylie lip challenge” was introduced. Jenner influenced many people to take part in a challenge to inflate their lips so they looked like hers. Big lips are a characteristic of African American individuals and was spread around as a trend when it was introduced by Jenner. Another popular example is Iggy Azalea who inhabits the black culture by using the language, the fashion and the style when she creates and performs her music. Along with that, in her raps she calls herself the “runaway slave master” which is undeniably impertinent. Azalea profits because she is a white person who sells a black sound. Many elements of different cultures are used by a lot of individuals in today’s society and is classified as modern pop culture, however, credit for these elements are often given to the wrong group of people or are blatantly disrespected. Celebrities use other cultures in order to gain success but do not always share a love for that specific culture. Throughout history, it was believed that people of colour needed to be controlled because they were labelled as barbaric. White people took it upon themselves to order the coloured people because they thought of themselves as the definition of beauty, poise and progress. Although those ideas developed centuries ago and humanity has come a long way since then, there are still traces of inequality that people of colour experience every day. Some of which takes place through the media and through cultural appropriation. White people still feel as though their actions are not racist or do not affect the “other” people, however that is not the case. What should be understood is that using things from another culture is alright, so long as credit is being given fairly. The dream is to one day live in a world where everyone is
