White Privilege: Video Analysis

Improved Essays
Privilege is a special right or advantage granted to a particular to a person or a group of people. Living in America and having the skin color of white is an advantage compared to other people of different skin color. White men have a higher privilege than white women though. Women don’t have the privilege for paid maternity leave in the United States except a few states. In the article I have supplied about maternity leave, it focuses on the dad’s long-term engagement with the child. This represents a huge privilege to men and not so much women as it should. We then have been talking about oppression, which is the state of being subject to unjust treatment or control. In the picture titled, “Inequality Systems”, there are many different types of oppression. Different types include racial, class, gender, sexual orientation, and many more. People of color vs. white people are the ones who are targeted, if you are poor, you become the target group, and if you are anything other than heterosexual you are considered the target group.

In the brief history video I have pinned, it takes about the history of white privilege and how African Americans were treated and what they were used for. This video is interesting because it shows how privilege and oppression have begun and how it still pertains to different ethnicities. By it starting centuries ago, we are still seeing more white privilege. In the picture I have labeled “Racism” draws my attention. If Americans are racist to African Americans, it’s a huge deal but if they are racist to Americans, it isn’t shunned upon. They are allowed to have clubs specifically for only their race but if white people were to start a club, it wouldn’t be allowed. This is considered a privilege they have. Each individual despite their race or gender should have all the same privileges and oppression shouldn’t

With white privilege comes a certain power. Wielding white privilege in your fist gives you the ability to argue that historically black colleges are racist, to argue that you suffer as much as the next person of color does, to scream and rally “All Lives Matter,” all the while denying you have this sort of power. Many white people do not know of its power, they do not know of its strength. However, they possess and use this strength in ways which they do not even realize. Without the acknowledgement of this power, people of color are left powerless and will continue to be abused by this system of bias.…

“White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…

My opinion one the video was that it was fascinating and interesting to watch for the reason that it was at high ends, and watching everyone’s different perspective of the concepts of pro white supremacy and anti-white supremacy kept me intertand. For example, while both have a valid reason to be for that movement in my own opinion I believe the entire “war” they have agents each other is really really stupid, history is there to learn from it not to make the same mistakes over and over again. I suppose it gets to me for the reason that instead of fighting in something stupid they could be helping the poor or raise money for charity with all the people that the two groups have; therefore, for me the entire concept of people of the same fighting…

I have always viewed racism as people of other color being discriminated against. Most people view privilege as being a favored state, meaning that by birth or luck a person is at an advantage to another. McIntosh states that privilege can also be viewed as a state of dominance because of one’s race or sex. I disagree that privilege should be viewed as dominance because individuals who are privileged do not necessarily set out to intentionally control others. McIntosh discusses what can be done to bring an end to white and male privilege.…

So with this in mind take an omniscient view of the social hierarchy in America. Minorities in this country have made historic milestones in order to have the rights and status that they have today. Although those advancements in American culture are truly substantial discrimination has yet to dissipate. White people live in a metaphorical bubble, and the message that is trying to be conveyed is that there are countless forms of racism and discrimination that White Americans will never have to concern themselves about. The impact of this social institution is significant in our culture.…

Peggy McIntosh elucidates the idea of white privilege as an “invisible backpack” of unearned rights and privileges that white people enjoy. White privilege is ignored by whites in society because we live in a nation of white dominance. Whites most often ignore the fact that blacks and other minorities do not enjoy these advantages. McIntosh defines white privilege as the many advantages white people enjoy, often seen as normal, and are largely unnoticed by society. Peggy McIntosh describes white privilege as “an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks. ”(Calihealth).…

Equal Opportunity for Low-Income Students Equality - what does it truly mean? To most people, the thought of social equality raises questions mainly dealing with race and gender. For instance, a popular issue today is the wage gap; a statistical estimation that states a woman is paid 79 percent of what a man is paid for performing the same job with the same credentials (aauw). A matter like this can certainly be solved to a certain extent by policy with enough reinforcement and push; however, can all social injustices be somewhat solved by policy and law? Unfortunately, no.…

This author mentions in the beginning that to truly understand the term privilege you must be willing to learn the basic foundation of the word (Ferguson 2014). Also, that thinking that the word privilege cannot be learned as a single lesson, but as a field of study, which means that we must continue reading, learning, and thinking critically. When looking at this term in a social-organizing setting, we see the word “privilege” refer to the set advantages that a group is favored by society, just by being within that group. Think of this term as bring born, members of the same privilege group all receive an invisible jetpack. They get so used to this jetpack they forget they even have it at all, even though it has helped them get through their daily obstacles.…
