According to Tim Wise, white privilege is being able to benefit just for your skin tone. Wise uses multiple examples of how being white is a privilege. For example, Tim Wise brings up the subject of drugs. He explains how many white people are actually more likely to be found with drugs, however many brown and black people are being pulled over instead. He discusses the subject of how if police were fighting against crime they would be more likely to pull over white people however they do not.…
Peggy McIntosh, author of the essay "White Privilege", gave a compelling argument and interview on the situation of race and how it plays in society. She discussed how white people don't address their "whiteness", the 5 impediments of US ideology, and the disadvantages of being a race other than white. Her argument is quite compelling and interesting to listen to, however, she used logical fallacies, making her argument weak. First, she addresses how white people don't accept their "whiteness" and their race. We often say "I don't see color" or try to defend how they are not racist human beings by not accepting their white race.…
In the article, What my Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege, the author explains how them changing their primary transportation method from a car to a bike has taught them a lesson about being privileged in America. Personally, I agree with everything that the author states and mentions within the article. A few main points I would like to highlight are privilege in general, the explanation of white privilege, and I would like to include my own experience viewing white privilege. Like the article mentions, the topic of white privilege is hard for a lot of people to talk about, and it is guaranteed to get some people into a heated argument.…
We live in a time where unfortunately, racism is still an issue that many people across many races deal with. In America, it is mainly African-Americans, Hispanics, and Middle Eastern people that deal with the pain and hatred that takes shape in many different forms. In “Understanding White Privilege” by Frances Kendall, Ph.D., the author explores the concept of white privilege with an informative, yet critical tone in order to persuade readers to think differently. Kendall starts off by explaining the purpose of her article, which is to “to become clear about the basics of white privilege what it is and how it works” (2).…
With white privilege comes a certain power. Wielding white privilege in your fist gives you the ability to argue that historically black colleges are racist, to argue that you suffer as much as the next person of color does, to scream and rally “All Lives Matter,” all the while denying you have this sort of power. Many white people do not know of its power, they do not know of its strength. However, they possess and use this strength in ways which they do not even realize. Without the acknowledgement of this power, people of color are left powerless and will continue to be abused by this system of bias.…
In the Color-Blind Privilege, people are brought up with different backgrounds and have different views on race. Charles Gallagher interviewed many people, but one interviewee, Sam, sticks out in particular. In his interview, he talks about pre and post-civil rights and tries to explain racial opportunity among his peers. He talks about how peers his age who are minorities use race as an excuse for not getting a job. Sam says, “These kids have every opportunity that I do as well”.…
no other choice. Same goes for education; you go where it is free or you get the best you can afford, which might also mean going somewhere close to home. According to Weber, we become trapped within iron cages. Majority individuals are trapped when it comes to white privilege.…
This essay discusses white privilege in the United States through the eyes of a middle class white woman who seems overwhelmed by an accident that changed her life. Jennifer Cramblett a 36 year old women and her unknown partner filled for a sperm donor and were hapily accepted, now simply had to complete the proccess by artificially inseminating herself with the sperm. But they were mistaken because the couple not only received the wrong sperm, but received an african american sample rather than the "blond hair, blue eyed, caucasian" sample they had asked for. Realizing this only after she was roughly five months pregnant the donor clinic sent her back her money with a full refund. Two years later Cramblett decided to sue the company not solely for medical malpractice, but also for the emotional…
White privilege is a topic that is always existing and has for a period of time, but it is not talked about that often and actions are not taken against it. This issue is difficult to diminish because the majority of people that are in authority are most like to be caucasians who are in that position thanks to the power of white privilege. It has cause many problems and caused many cases of unfair of treatment anywhere from inside a personal household to a community, to the society, and all the way to the institutional level, and can be the source of systematic discriminations as far as to the federal government and to the supreme court. Unfair treatment in the workplace, in the social justice system may be an effect for life threatening issues. An example of this that I wall be discussing in my paper will involve a case that happened recently, comprised of the association with an African American victim and a Caucasian authority.…
The article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” was written to inform the reader about white privilege and male privilege. It states that men necessarily do not realize that they hold an advantage over women just as though whites do not always realize they are more privileged than blacks. The author Peggy McIntosh thoroughly describes that just by being born with white skin, you automatically are at an advantage over someone who was not born white. She also explains that men do in fact recognize women’s status in the world and will do certain things to improve it. However, they are unwilling to do anything to lessen their own privilege.…
In the modern age, we are taught that all people are equal and every person, no matter their race or gender are awarded the same privileges. Is this in fact really true? Many people seem to get a little shaky on the topic of privilege and race. When a black man speaks about the injustices against his people the majority of this country are unable to empathize due to the fact that they can never step foot in their shoes. Privileges are defined by the people who have them.…
After some decisions made in recent court cases, society brings about the term “white privilege” quite often. Some in society say that white people may get less harsh punishments for the same criminal act than a person of color. Others in society say that their claims are untrue, leaving the question about whether white privilege is or isn’t an actuality. In the article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Backpack” published online at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, author Peggy McIntosh claims that white people do not acknowledge white privilege because they are taught not to notice it.…
White privilege is ignored by whites in society because we live in a nation of white dominance. Whites most often ignore the fact that blacks and other minorities do not enjoy these advantages. McIntosh defines white privilege as the many advantages white people enjoy, often seen as normal, and are largely unnoticed by society. Peggy McIntosh describes white privilege as “an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks. ”(Calihealth).…
ne of the videos I watched is part of a documentary called “Eye of the Storm”. In the video, which took place in Iowa, Jane Elliot, a white, third grade teacher, took a new approach to teaching her class of young students about discrimination. She conducted an experiment in which she divided her class by eye color: those with blue eyes and those with brown eyes. This video portrays a combination of prejudice, racism, and discrimination. Racism is shown when the kids are asked if there is anyone in the United States that they do not treat as their brothers and they respond by saying things like “the black people” and “the Indians”.…
In the following video, I think that the video demonstrates discrimination. Discrimination refers to actual actions against people based on their gender, race, religion, etc. The concept is demonstrated when the parents meet their daughter's fiance. They are hanging out in a restaurant together and the daughter tells her parents how she's newly engaged. The parents reactions are excitement and happiness for their daughter.…
