White Privilege In Today's Society

In today's world, having white skin is considered a huge benefit and having any other skin color is a disadvantage. White privilege is knowing that the white man will never have the same consequences as the black man. This is called white privilege. This has been around for hundreds of years and isn't showing signs of stopping. The author of the huffington post, Erin Parker, described his point of view on the way that blacks and whites should be treated when he said, “white privilege is the fact that i'll get the benefit of the doubt because of my skin color. No one will lock doors when i walk by, and i certainly wont be followed around a store”(The huffington post Pg 1). This explains that whites have always been favored over blacks in any situation. People know that white privilege exists and they don't have any fear about going out into society and being followed or having people lock doors on them.

Blacks are still being discriminated against and are still not equal in today's society. According to USA Today, “Arrest rates are lopsided almost everywhere. Only 173 of the 3,538 police departments USA Today examined arrested black people at a rate equal to or lower than other racial groups”(USA Today). This is a prime example of white privilege because it shows that in 4% of police stations, they didn't arrest more blacks than other races. This tells is that white people think that white privilege is gone but, although not many people seem to realize it, the statistics clearly show blacks being discriminated against through arrest like in the 1900’s. Therefore white privilege is still her but many do not notice
