White Privilege
One may believe white privilege is the inherited advantage white people have based on their race in a society that contains racial inequalities and injustices. Privilege is a special right, advantage, or freedom granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. In America, there are certain individuals that are more advantaged than others are. I believe that everyone has at least one advantage over someone else that is less fortunate in one particular area of life than they are. There are several different examples and cases of privilege that contains different components of whatever it involves. The topic can be seen as controversial and easily dismissed by people because of the lead word “white”, which has the perception of being derogatory and limiting when you first glance at the title. Many people when they are initially introduced to the topic of white privilege they dismiss it because it just points out one race, nobody wants to be held responsible for something they feel they have no control over, some people don’t realize they have more privileges than others, and others just doesn’t read about because of the title. There’s not really a consensus among society based on if it exist or not, it’s up to the individual if they believe it or not. In “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, Peggy McIntosh, asserts that certain people have doors open to them based upon nothing they did to earn them and that there are conditions of daily experiences that certain people are granted that seemed small and basic, but only are limited to people of white decent. In addition, McIntosh compares the privilege of white males and female to make the general white privilege argument more digestible to those who are unaware that they benefit from white privilege and those that don’t understand how they benefit from it. In her comparison, she argues that men would not admit that they are more privileged than women, even when they would conclude that women are more disadvantaged than them. Although everyone has certain individual skills and talents, I believe white privilege exists. In this essay, I’m going to examine several ideas that I believe argue in favor of my belief that White Privilege exist. The ideas that I’m going to indicate is the early beginnings of African American, redlining and zoning laws, the need for affirmative action, mass incarceration, and police
