White People: Discrimination In An Unequal Society

Improved Essays
When I said white people, I was not referring to every white person in the entire world. I was referring to the article we read in regards to the white student that thought she was cheated off admission and that a black student took her spot. For one thing, I was not generalizing that every white person is racist. Although, white privilege is still a thing and so is the white mentality. We live in an unequal society built on racism that benefits white people over people of color. When I said I do not think white people have ever been discriminated against. I was pointing out the fact those that are non-minority could never ever experience any kind of discrimination. I am not uncertain, I was making a statement. It’s just not possible for white

Reading these articles was an eye opener. Before I read these articles, I had a sense of white privilege but never really thought about it. As stated in White Privilege by Peggy McIntosh on page 172, “..whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege.” Learning about it has really opened my eyes about society and the government, and it’s shocking. I never knew Asian Americans faced such severe treatment.…

White privilege is a topic that is always existing and has for a period of time, but it is not talked about that often and actions are not taken against it. This issue is difficult to diminish because the majority of people that are in authority are most like to be caucasians who are in that position thanks to the power of white privilege. It has cause many problems and caused many cases of unfair of treatment anywhere from inside a personal household to a community, to the society, and all the way to the institutional level, and can be the source of systematic discriminations as far as to the federal government and to the supreme court.
Unfair treatment in the workplace, in the social justice system may be an effect for life threatening issues. Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexican-Americans, whether legal or not, have been discriminated against in the United States since they came to the land said to be built upon freedom and equality. They have became an ethnic, social, and linguistic minority in a vastly white English speaking majority. Through appealing to morals, examples of discrimination, and the use of statistics, Gibson emphasizes the urgency and magnitude of the problem of Hispanic discrimination in America. By appealing to the morals of his non-Hispanic audience, Gibson effectively proves that discriminating against Hispanics is clearly the wrong thing to do and that our society needs to come together to stop this problem. He begins his argument by saying what truly “makes…

America has not always the great country we have been lead to believe. Since the end of the civil war, racism against blacks grew greater and greater with every passing day making it harder for these people to live their lives. This leads to the unfair treatment of immigrants trying to find a new life in America after being pushed out of their countries by poverty, revolution, and starvation. These events happen with an incompetent government only interested in doing anything to benefit itself. America has treated the people living within and arriving at the country with discrimination with an incompetent government.…

United States is considered to be a melting pot of many ethnicities. These ethnicities have helped United States grow, develop, and change by working together. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Progressive Era, progression had become possible by looking past ethnic background and uniting the people as Americans to accomplish equality in rights, benefits, and work for all. However, it must be noted that these accomplishments of color America where not made by verbal dispute for equality but by working together and physically pushing through prejudice and racism till they reach their goal. “The wisest among my race understand that the agitation of questions of social equality is the extremist folly, and that progress in the enjoyment of all the privileges that will come to us must be the result of severe and constant struggle rather than of artificial forcing” ("Booker T. Washington Delivers the 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech.").…

I believe majority of society do not really recognize the meaning of white privilege, meanwhile; we are more to busy tweeting out on society media before understanding. A lot of them want to disagree it since they think that all it means is that they didn’t work hard for what they earn and everything they have was given due to the color of their skin. All it means is they are the dominate racial group in America, they are represented in the media better than other racial groups. Hence, they are not discriminated against in institutions since they have majority of controls. Moreover, their look is the standard of beauty while women from ethnic groups are made to believe they are ugly in the United States because they lack European features.…

So if a child is raised to believe that all people, no matter the color of their skin, are created equal and should be treated equally like all others there shouldn’t be a reason why that child won’t grow up the believe this is true unless a situation comes up an presents itself otherwise. White people are taught that they have privilege over other races, that they are superior and should be treated as such. An interaction can cause a child to develop an opinion of other ethnicity when watching others interact with other races…

White Privilege in America "White privilege" is the idea that white people unintentionally and automatically get certain perks and advantages that people of color do not receive. Many do not believe in such a concept because in America, all people are suppose to be equal, however, it is easy to see that a white person is treated differently than a person of color solely because of the color of their skin. White people living in America receive numerous “perks” on a daily basis. A number of people that get these perks probably do not stop and realize they are getting something that a person with a darker colored skin could not get. For instance, if a black woman went to a clothing store to find nude undergarments, she would most likely have a difficult time finding something that matched her skin tone because most items that are “nude” match a much lighter skin tone.…

This privilege creates an ease that other races do not have, nor will they ever have, until the white race acknowledges that privilege exists. The white race acknowledging their privilege would mean agreeing that racism exists, and the white man would have to give up his power, agreeing that the other races have been oppressed by the white race. The racial identity of a white male or white female seems to be hidden, underlying, and almost secretive. "White" people have been placed on a pedestal for a long time, leading to stereotypes about other races that perpetuate the inequality(Recupero pg 1). White privilege has existed throughout history and is still a touchy subject in white society today.…
