White Lie: Article Analysis

White Lies Biziou-van-Pol, Haenen, Novaro, Liberman, and Capraro (2015) define a white lie as “a lie that benefits another person” (p. 538). Hsu and Cheung (2013) define white lies as “untruthful statements concerning an opinion, or personal preference, for a prosocial purpose, such as protecting the lie recipient’s feelings or maintaining politeness” (Hsu & Cheung, 2013, p. 1651). Whichever way it is defined, a white lie is used in a prosocial context to maintain cohesion within a relationship or social group. As Biziou-van-Pol et al. (2015) questioned, the telling of white lies may indicate an individual’s prosocial tendencies. Broomfield, Robinson, and Robinson (2002) investigated whether age impacted children’s tendencies to tell white lies. The researchers found that as children grew older, they were more likely to give false responses to questions asked of them and to tell …show more content…

The results of the study of white lies by Broomfield et al. (2002) were consistent with the results of the study of white lies by Warneken and Orlins (2015). Broomfield et al. (2002) concluded that not only are children more likely to lie as they age, but they are more likely to tell a white lie that would make someone feel better about themselves if they were feeling sad. In the essay titled “Lying” by Sam Harris, when he states that “not all acts of deception are lies,” this does not imply that not saying the truth about a topic is not lying. Throughout his writing, Harris expresses the different situations. At times, humans may object that not saying the truth it’s the correct thing to do; in order to safe another being’s life. However, he also portrays examples of how “doing the right thing,” meaning to say a “white” lie, may not provide the positive result that we intended to obtain. For instance, in a situation where the mother is terminally ill and her son just died in a car accident, is keeping the truth from what happened morally correct?…

Despite several variations presented with each fib, I found myself picking two of these ten prevarications from the list, and being able to relate these types of lies with my own personal experience. In other words, I have been guilty of committing a white lie and putting up a façade when it comes to pinpointing the type of fabrication l use on a daily basis. The form in which Stephanie Ericsson defines a white lie and façades, is by either describing some of her own experience and encounter with these two types of lies, or utilizing a relatable example of how each lie can play in a person’s life. In regards to telling a white lie, Ericsson states, “The white lie assumes that the truth will cause more damage than a simple, harmless untruth.…

My “personal odyssey” occurred relatively recently, this past summer while I was at a sleepaway camp in New Hampshire. The last year you are eligible to come, the summer before your sophomore year, you stay in a cabin off the main camp called Cabin 12, which holds great significance due to the fact that you’re the oldest on campus, and closer to a counselor then a camper. On the other hand, while viewing the film True Lies, I found it very violent and infiltrating to the mind and soul. The protagonist Harry, is portrayed as a white traditional family man, who happens to be the head of his household. On the other hand, Harry’s wife Helen, is portrayed as the traditional mother/housewife character and is employed as a legal secretary, which is considered as a lower paying job in comparison to Harry’s.
