(1) What arguments does DiAngelo make in her article? The author Robin DiAngelo makes the claim that White people have the upper hand in society because racism is embedded in our country. However, when a white person is confronting racial stress, their behavior can vary from anger to silence (54). DiAngelo describes racial stress to be any thing that is not “racially familiar” (57). In her article, DiAngelo gives life examples of situations where white people experience stress such as one claiming a whites perspective is coming from a racist perspective or having a leader other than white be the authority figure (57). DiAngelo begins with context of how and why a white person will experience discomfort. The evident historical segregation has undoubtedly left whites with preconceived ideas about people of color. I can imagine it is hard for a white to act calm in a racial stressed situation because they haven’t been equipped with truthful information about another person or exposed to not being the authority figure. Individualism in particular illustrates these preconceived ideas a white person is brought up with. Individualism acknowledges that everyone is the same, yet in society that individualism has favored whites. DiAngelo gives the example of an anti-racism training she facilitated that affected participants. A participant was ill prepared to have discourse about racism that caused her to say, “ [I] might be having a heart-attack” (65). In order for members of our society to be better prepared to speak on racism, discussion needs to happen with small topics to avoid feeling being hurt and allegations that may taint an individual's involvement in the discussion. As I learned from DiAngelo’s reading, it’s important for people of color to have White allies that promote change, therefore bringing up topics with pace will be prosperous in the long
