White Farmer Flaws

During the 1780s a series of problems arose in the United States pointing out the flaws in the Constitution. The inability to issue taxes and rebellions of poor white farmers left the United States in a serious crisis. Although these issues posed a serious problem at the time, they provided the much needed provisions to shape the newly formed government. When the United States was first formed, the government had no power to issue taxes on the people. This lead to the country falling further and further into a national debt after the Revolutionary War. The government was up to their throat in debt and had no way to pay it off. This, along with the influx of imported goods, caused an economic depression in the states. The only way for money to get to the national government was from states that gave money. This was hard to do for many because of the lack of payment from the government. Soldiers were promised payment for fighting, and due to the lack of money, were not able to receive this. This drove people mad, and in the case of farmers in Massachusetts, something would be done. These farmers relied solely on their crops to keep them self sufficient in life. While these farmers fought in the war, their was no one to farm their land. Many of these men had their property foreclosed. With the lack of payment from the government, they had nothing to live on. This caused mass frustration, leading to a large scale rebellion known as Shays’s Rebellion. Lead by Daniel Shays, a large group of poor with farmers took action against the government. They would march down to courts armed with weapons, and stop them from issuing foreclosures of their land. Since the farmers had not representation in the government, they felt they had no other
