In response to Julys, radio program titled “this American life” which shed more light on a subject that I have come to question, that is of “white privilege” found in the education system. For example, when stripped of full accreditation and resources, schools in Normandy Ferguson whose population a mixture of black and Latino were subject to major change through, unknowingly, desegregation in the education system. This placed colored youth along those of upper social classes a majority of white students. In addition, the results were uncanny and proved that your placement in society determines your education. Once parents from the other side of town caught wind of these students moving to their schools stereotypes were the main concern at…

“My schooling gave me no training in seeing myself as an oppressor, as an unfairly advantaged person, or as a participant in a damaged culture.” (McIntosh, 1). From a minorities stand point achieving the white norm is a difficult task. “People of color experience explicit racial socialization, meaning they are taught in their families, in schools, and through the media that their race matters. White people, on the other hand, may have difficulties with the topic of race and privilege for the simple fact that such conversations have likely been uncommon in their lives.”…

Shamus Khan’s Privilege: The Making of an Adolescent Elite at St. Paul’s School is a excellent example of the sociological imagination at work. The book examines the school from all angles, from different perspectives, and compares it to the school’s earlier years. Kahn often includes anecdotal stories of specific students in between his sociological analyses which help bring the situation to life and provide a more in depth look at the student’s lives. C. Wright Mills, the American sociologist who claimed that the sociological imagination was being lost in most research, would have found Kahn’s book to be a rich examination of the culture of St. Paul’s School. In American society today we are taught to see social constructs such as gender, sexuality, race, and class as something that puts people at a disadvantage; in doing this, we often fail to recognize the areas in which we are privileged. It is important to understand that we are all privileged in certain ways. Simply being able-bodied in an ableist society or thin in a fat-shaming society grants members of those groups privilege. In this regard, white privilege is the privilege a person gets by being a white person in a white-dominant society. It does not have to do with any one individual, what they do or who they are, only the fact that they are white.…

A few weeks ago, I was with a very good (female black) friend at another friend’s apartment just enjoying a relaxing Saturday night. However, the parking in the apartments was very limited, so my friend and I decided to park in handicap spots (yes, I know, shame on us). Later that night when we were walking to our cars we realized that her car had been towed, but mine had not. She definitely had the right to be mad, but she then went on to say “Ugh, screw you and your white privilege”!…

It an important conclusion to draw that the white culture clearly does not see the negative effects of these commercials and the roles they play on people of color. This connects with an in-class discussion on the methods of discounting societal problems. The biggest issue of the three when discussing the production of subtle discrimination in commercials is denial. The failure to even acknowledge that a societal problem exists and not acting upon it reinforces that whites are still dominant in the culture.…
