In the past, our society saw men as the “breadwinners” while women are expected to take care the house works and the children at home. This idea causes a segregation between men and women in occupation. Most of the jobs available in the society are men-dominated. Women have difficulty to have a good job because most of the jobs are men-dominated. Even if some women are able to have the job, they are still facing segregation like earning less salary, less autonomy, and even sometimes they receive sexual harassment from the work place. It is understandable that there are people, especially men, who are not ready to shift their idea to have women working at the same place and position as them. It will take a long time to lower the occupation segregation percentage between men and women. …show more content…
The first one is the white-collar occupation. This term is the highest level of occupation people in the United States can have. It demands high salary income, a prestige, and also an autonomy job. Some of the occupations are doctors, executives, lawyers, and university professors. Most of the workers are men. There are some women who work in this field, but most of them are paid less than men, and they are usually located in small local office (199). The pink-collar occupation is the second term. The meaning of this term is the occupations in here are women-dominated. The women-dominated jobs are prestige, but not at the same level as the white-collar occupation. The society sees the jobs are semi-professionals, but like in the white-collar, women in this field are paid in less salary and less autonomy. Some of the occupations are K-12 teachers, librarians, counselors, dietitians, and nurses (199). If there are men working in this field, they will earn more than the women although this is a women-dominated
