Though many may take zippers for granted, they are a fairly new invention. In fact, zippers were patented in 1891 as ‘clasp lockers’ by Whitcomb Judson. Though this ‘clasp locker’ proved practical for many years, one of Judson’s factory workers took it into their own hands to make adjustments. Employee Gideon Sundback improved this older model, and patented the ‘Hookless Fastener’ in 1913 before improving it further and renaming it the ‘Separable Fastener’ in 1917. The real question is, how did the zipper get the name… well, zipper? The B.F. Goodrich company first used the name ‘Zipper’ when an executive testing a prototype said “Zip’er up!”, imitating the sound the fastener made. Real impressive, I know. Crazy enough, not everybody
