Whistleblowing: A Qualitative Case Study

Decent Essays
The following are three qualitative questions that I chose:

1. How does whistleblowing effect a police officers career?

2. Does police culture allow for rule bending on and off the job?

3. What causes some police officers to break the law?
The qualitative approach I would use for question one would be a collective case study. I think that this would be the most suitable approach, because while I would be interested in individual cases, a comparison to other similar cases would be most beneficial to understand the potential impact of whistleblowing. As described by the text, the primary purpose of a a collective case study is to understand a "phenomenon or event comparatively." (pg 358)

The SEC’s Dodd-Frank whistleblower program is getting a lot of attention now that the agency is announcing substantial rewards given for information. The SEC does not disclose the name of the company involved, nor the name of the whistleblower who received the reward, however, people still worry about maintaining their anonymity. While the whistleblower program has strong protections against retaliation, such as an employer firing an employee who gave the SEC a tip, there's no protection against gossip and social alienation. Once an individual reports original information about a probable securities law violation, it may take months, or even years, before there is an SEC enforcement action. If no action is taken, or the sanctions against…

The example of a whistleblower that I found through research was Stefan P. Kruszewski, he was involved in multiple suits involving inadequate care, retaliation, and fraud. Kruszewski was a psychiatric medical consultant for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW), one of his duties was to “root out fraud, waste, and abuse so that neither the federal dollars… nor the state funding… would be forced to pay for unnecessary, inferior, or substandard care” (Kenney, P. 7). After reporting his findings on a being fired for not keeping silent he proceeded to file a First Amendment case against the state and multiple suits against Southwood Psychiatric Hospital, Pfizer Inc., and AstraZeneca. In all cases he was successful with the help of…

False reporting is an afflicting issue that is universal to crimes, many times regardless of the crimes’ nature, the crimes’ location, and the crimes’ severity. The laws in place in many states in the United States of America include a statute on the false reporting of a crime and alleged criminal activity to law enforcement. In the current statute held by the state of Minnesota it states what constitutes as a false report and that a false report is that if anyone who knowingly informs a law enforcement officer of a crime that has been committed or gives information knowing that it is false in the intent that the officer will then act upon that information is guilty of a gross misdemeanor. (MN, 609.505) If an individual that is accused of false reporting is found guilty of this gross misdemeanor the perpetrator can face a penalty of up to 1 year’s imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.…

Law Enforcement Interview Police officers are seen under the radar in everyday life. By under the radar I mean, we notice them driving around town, or when we are slamming on our brakes passing them going twenty miles over the speed limit on the interstate, or when we all pretend to be perfect drivers when we notice them trailing us from our rear view mirrors. What we don’t notice is who the police officer that’s giving us a ticket is, or what their ranking is or how well trained or educated they are. Police officers are easily disliked by the public because of their jobs of handing out tickets, or making necessary arrests but all they’re trying to do is keep the community safe.…
