Breaches of electronic data have become a major problem, especially since most providers are switching to electronic systems. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, gives individuals and patients the right to access their own health information. HIPAA not only allows flow of health information but it promotes great quality health for well-being of our people. The primary goal of the Privacy Rule is to assure that individuals’ health information is accurately secured while integrating the flow of health information needed to implement and advocate high quality health care and to protect the public 's health and well- being. A federal law that is significantly affecting all hospitals is the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
