In the beginning of the poem he starts to talk about himself like there he lives and where he walks to get home. Poetry is generally used to tell a story whether it be about love or an epic adventure. Sonnets specifically tend to deal with complications that come with love. Billy Collins however decided to go a different route in his poem “Sonnet.” His poem is a lesson about the sonnet and how he believes the form needs to change. He does this by explaining the different forms of a sonnet, by adding in characters to support his claims, and by using figurative language to emphasize the changes he believes need to be made.…

TO BILLY: No. While the metaphor is poignant and earnest in its simplicity, the poem is largely unclear and underdeveloped. There are several images presented that may come across as confusing to the reader, as well. First Reader’s Comments: Specific Comments: S2, L1 - I feel as though the use of violent imagery is inconsistent with the idea of fixing a piece of broken glass together with tape.…

Repetition happens a lot throughout this poem. Repeating the same phrases over and over again give the reader an insight on how the narrator is feeling about the death that has happened. It also makes the reader feel the emotions and how sad this poem actually is. The narrator is going through a difficult situation and the repetition in the poem makes it even more deep than it is meant to. It also may be relatable to someone who has gone through a death of a relative.…

It is comprised of themes such as chivalry, order, and honor. All these themes are made obvious through the details in the dialogue. While all these themes enable the poem to be in existence, one theme that is not as blatantly obvious, yet crucial to the plot is nature. In this poem, nature is depicted through both the iconic Green Knight, as well as through the lifestyle of Bertilak of Hautdeser. Both depictions are greatly different, yet they both represent the natural component to this fantastical story.…

The three poems I chose to analyze are “To My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet, “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes, and “When I Have Fears” by John Keats. In all honesty, I flipped thru the book and read different poems until I found ones I liked and were able to understand the basic concept of the poem. In fact, doing research on the authors gave me a better understanding of their poems, for example Anne Bradstreet was a Puritan and her poems were emotions she could not express to others because it was against her beliefs. My favorite poem is “To My Dear and Loving Husband” because it is a sweet and romantic poem discussing Bradstreet’s love for her husband. This poem is not considered a traditional sonnet since it only…

The opening of the poem was the professor giving an assignment. Like professors still do today, Hughes was given the tasks of writing a page about himself. Of course, it sounds easy to do, but the page must be originated and must be deep within the student. In line 6 Hughes states a question, "I wonder if it's that simple?" On his way home, he looks around for inspiration, he starts to realize where he lives and what his neighborhood is like.…

I’m sure we’ve all heard of Billy Collins at some point and time; whether it was on NPR or an ad on the Internet, everyone probably has come across him at some point. Why I say this is because he’s become such a known poet, he has performed for Congress after 9/11, sold many copies of his published works, and been named “America’s first truly poet since Robert Frost” and to be named that, that mean’s he’s made it. There might be some confusion as to why Collins is so popular if someone hasn’t ever actually read his poems or heard of him. His poems are so liked because they are “conversational, witty, quirky, tender, warm, and every day readings” (Poetry Foundation.) Collins, one of the best poets since Robert Frost, who is able to understand…
