Everyone comes from something. It is important to know where you come from because your roots help define who you are. Regarding demigods, heritage is an important issue. Characters who illustrate this point in the novel, The Sea of Monsters, include: Poseidon, Percy, Annabeth, Tyson, and Luke. Here are some examples.

It can also exemplify friends and the people who you grew up with. Annabeth is an example of this. Running away from home at a young age Annabeth is chased by many monsters; she finds safety and protection with Luke and Thalia. They stuck together, and she learned from them. Despite all hardships, the trio survived through many adversities. Annabeth talks about how they fought together and lived on their own like a family, for many years. To survive alone like that took a bond of skill and trust. In many ways, they made her into who she was during the story.
Another example of how your heritage can influence you is the family environment you grow up in. Annabeth’s family, which included a father, stepmom, and siblings, was quite large and surrounding. Percy was raised by a single mother who was always working. You would think that Annabeth had the stronger family environment, but even at an early age she had trouble with her parents and she ended up running away from home. Percy's mom however made up for all her time spent at work as best as she could and instilled stronger values in Percy.
