The setting of the novel is in northeastern Oklahoma near the Ozark Mountains on Cherokee land. The location is relevant to the story due to the fact that hunting was a popular sport and a good way to earn money. The coons are what cause the basic plot of the novel by making Billy want to purchase coon hounds so he can hunt, have companions, and help his family make money. Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann grow together as characters by being a determined, hardworking, loyal group. The three of them face many challenges from the two Pritchard boys, Ruben and Rainie, such as catching the famous “ghost coon.” After a long chase, the dogs manage to tree the coon. As Ruben begins to beat up Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann attack the Pritchard’s dog. Ruben then tries to assault Billy’s dogs with an ax, but falls and kills himself. Billy and Rainie are traumatized by the event. To relieve some stress, Billy’s grandfather enters Billy and his dogs in a coon hunting contest. Although a harsh blizzard occurs during the contest, Old Dan and Little Ann pull through and win the prize of three hundred dollars. After the contest, they continue to hunt as they did before, but the dogs tree a mountain lion. The cat attacks Old Dan, but Billy would not leave his dogs to
