Chapter 8 of the book Where the Red Fern Grows discusses how Billy was getting ready to go hunting with his dogs. As Billy is getting prepared to go hunting with his dogs, his dad had came to where he was, and gave him a talk that since there was nothing to do in the house, he told that he can hunt all he wanted.He also talked to him about how his mother doesn't like him going hunting by himself. After Billy got done talking to his dogs, they were on there way to search for a coon. When Billy was walking all by himself, he kept on walking, until he heard noises from Old Dan. He stopped, dropping his ax and lantern, he felt something that was on him. He gave Old Dan and Little Ann a signal to get their attention. They was going to a trail of the river coon.
