Chapter 8 of the book Where the Red Fern Grows discusses how Billy was getting ready to go hunting with his dogs. As Billy is getting prepared to go hunting with his dogs, his dad had came to where he was, and gave him a talk about how his mother doesn't like him going hunting by himself. The best advice that Billy’s dad gave to him was that he should tell his mother where he was going hunting, and which he did during supper time.He told his mother where he was going hunting. His mother gave an approval that he can go hunting, and had a bad feeling which made think that whether he should go or not. His father packed his things,and his family walked him out of the house, and he was on his way to catch a coon.

As they begin to walk, Little Ann and Old Dan heard something. The animal had left its place, and was going straight towards Billy. Following the coon, came behind Little Ann and Old Dan. He was cheering for his dogs,and begin to follow the dogs and the coon, until they ran up on a big tree. When Billy saw the big tree, he called it all kinds of names the giant, the chicken tree, until he called it the big tree bottoms. There was anything that he couldn't do, because the tree was so big, so he lost all hope. He told his dogs that he couldn't catch the coon. His dogs were really sad for what he said. He still had that bad feeling, until suddenly he remembered what he said to his dogs. He stated to his dogs that if they put the coon on a tree, he would do the rest, he also didn't care if it take it year to cut that tree. Billy got his ax,and started chopping the tree. He chopped the tree, until the next day. The next day, and Billy's dad came over to see what was Billy doing. He wanted to know why did Billy came home last night. Billy told him that there was a coon the big tree, and he was trying his best not to give up on his dogs. Billy told his dad that he wasn't going to back home, because of trying to get the coon up off the tree, and if he didn't his dogs wouldn't believe him. Billy's dad didn't have no choice, but to let Billy keep on
