Fate works in ways that sometimes appear off of the normal path. In Where She Went by Gayle Forman(2), it has been three years since rock musician Adam Wilde lost the love of his life. Throughout the novel, Adam has an internal battle getting over his ex-girlfriend,(3) Mia Hall. His past haunts him, influencing his current lifestyle. Everything he does in the present is affected by his past memories of Mia(4). The book starts with him being in a deep depression, pushing away everyone who cares about him, letting his reputation go to waste. Then one day in New York he stumbles into Mia again and they go on an adventure through the city. Because of this interaction, Adam slowly returns to his old self.

For Adam and Mia it was similar. (8) Since Mia’s family got in a fatal car crash, she changed, as anyone would. Yet the thing is that she pushed Adam away, making both of them become miserable. Though she was distant from him, he was there for every step of the way. Mia appeared to not care, and so now, Adam pretends to not care about anything or anyone. It is his defense mechanism now so he will avoid being damaged by someone he cares for. Three years later and he is still torn up by the whole split. When he runs into her in the park, they start to catch up, and it stuns him that she is acting as if nothing happened, that they are old friends. She brings him to a small diner that is a favorite of hers. Chatting and making small talk of how is it possible they do not have marionberry, an old favorite food of hers, in New York City, all Adam can think is “How is it possible that a boyfriend ceases to exist from one day to another?” (Forman 72). Playing the victim, he feels wounded (9) and can not help but wish she would just stop avoiding the elephant in the room; why did she leave him the way she did? Adam lets the reader in on his perception of the whole interaction, but is still too fearful to let anyone in
