Where She Lead Him (1)
Fate works in ways that sometimes appear off of the normal path. In Where She Went by Gayle Forman(2), it has been three years since rock musician Adam Wilde lost the love of his life. Throughout the novel, Adam has an internal battle getting over his ex-girlfriend,(3) Mia Hall. His past haunts him, influencing his current lifestyle. Everything he does in the present is affected by his past memories of Mia(4). The book starts with him being in a deep depression, pushing away everyone who cares about him, letting his reputation go to waste. Then one day in New York he stumbles into Mia again and they go on an adventure through the city. Because of this interaction, Adam slowly returns to his old self.

For Adam and Mia it was similar. (8) Since Mia’s family got in a fatal car crash, she changed, as anyone would. Yet the thing is that she pushed Adam away, making both of them become miserable. Though she was distant from him, he was there for every step of the way. Mia appeared to not care, and so now, Adam pretends to not care about anything or anyone. It is his defense mechanism now so he will avoid being damaged by someone he cares for. Three years later and he is still torn up by the whole split. When he runs into her in the park, they start to catch up, and it stuns him that she is acting as if nothing happened, that they are old friends. She brings him to a small diner that is a favorite of hers. Chatting and making small talk of how is it possible they do not have marionberry, an old favorite food of hers, in New York City, all Adam can think is “How is it possible that a boyfriend ceases to exist from one day to another?” (Forman 72). Playing the victim, he feels wounded (9) and can not help but wish she would just stop avoiding the elephant in the room; why did she leave him the way she did? Adam lets the reader in on his perception of the whole interaction, but is still too fearful to let anyone in

After reading and reviewing information on Sarah Good I was able to create a portrait of her that represents her as she is described in history. In many excerpts of Sarah Good she is described as being “filthy” or even as an “old hag” so, I portrayed Good with flies flying around her, scruff marks, as well as a wrinkled forehead. Because Good and her family were said to be poor and beggars, she is wearing a simple dress. I have also included a symbol of hands begging for bread to represent this. Another description of Good said that she lived detached from society.…

Observing characters is a big part of every novel. Each one of them has traits that drive the story to the next event and if one character seemed off, the whole story could have been ruined before it got to the end. The book called “So Yesterday” by Scott Westerfeld centers on a character named Jen, she is one of the main characters in the story. If she or another character in place of her were taken out of the story, it would have ended the moment after the main character is introduced. Because of Jen, Hunter the main character and the story is driven along to many adventure.…

Death and Hope in Behind the Beautiful Forevers could be found many times throughout the novel in many different aspects and tones. In one instance specifically, it is explained how Meena and Manju discuss the concept of suicide quite frankly, as well as the hope the community has held in Navratri. Death and Hope is also prevalent within my own life with my experiences in depression and suicidal thoughts jading me to the different methods and motives for suicide, as well as hope and my general outlook on life and how I live every single day. I can relate to Behind the Beautiful Forevers through the motif of Death because of how the characters discuss methods and motives for suicide as it connects to my past when I was going through depression…
