I made many deliberate choices when creating my visual; for example, using a multicolor background to represent the active brain patterns, along with the chaos and that can sometimes happen in the mind. In addition, the background also represents the many things that go into a person’s identity; it is not always neat and organized in a person’s brain. There are pictures that circle around a girl who is smiling with brown hair; the brown haired girl represents myself, and the pictures symbolize characteristics that form my identity. To further this, the arrows point towards me to express that those factors are a part of me, and make me who I am. Although there are a lot more adjectives that help to create my identity, I chose the most important ones because there are too many to list them all. Each individual picture represents another part of my identity, and gives more insight to who I am. I put a lot of time and effort into this piece to find words that fit well, flow well, and spell the word “Freedom” diagonally across the poem. This piece is about self-expression, society, and social media. Many people today post things on social media and express themselves through their posts. What I am addressing in my poem is how quickly people are to judge others. Not only does this relate to me, but to everyone. Since people are now allowed to hide behind a screen, it makes it easy for them to bully others online or say mean comments. This relates to me because it is a serious topic that is has been happening to many people lately. Adding on to this, society, social media, and self-expression affect me because I sometimes feel like I cannot express myself without being judged. The message I conveyed in the “Self- Expression Poem” was that the freedom that people have in this era is not always good, because they tend to use it negatively. For example, people often times put others down and use social media negatively because they have so much unmonitored freedom.
