In the short stories, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?” by Tim O’Brien the main characters in each story long to be free again in their life. The character, Paul, in “Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?” by Tim O’Brien, feels restricted by living in the wilderness during the war; Paul gets lost in the war because he gets caught up in the moment. He wants to have the feeling of being free again in his life. He always wants to be free, and the sea brings him that feeling of safety and closure. Paul feels like fear has taken over him; he feels depressed, and very anxious to get out of the war. Paul longs to go to the sea to find the resolution he has been waiting for. He wants to forget about being afraid on the first day, he wants to smell the ocean salts and know that he is safe (213). In the end, the reader was meant to believe that Paul would reach the sea and experience the closure that he longed for.
Similar to Paul, the main protagonist in, “The Yellow Wallpaper“ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is also yearning to be free and is looking to find herself. The protagonist has been trying to find herself for a extensive time and she keeps getting caught up in the moment by getting lost in the wallpaper. The woman has gotten lost in the wallpaper, just like Paul got lost in the wilderness. They both get lost and become stressed, but the woman becomes depressed and averse, “But these nervous troubles are dreadfully depression”(2). Becoming depressed made the woman’s self-esteem worse;
