Where Do People Live Analysis

The post assessment “Where Do People Live” form the QRI-5 resource book. This is an expository text about country, city, and suburb living. She scored a 50% on the concept questions showing unfamiliarity with the subject matter. Unfortunately this was the test I had so I administered it assuming I may have to re-evaluate another day. When she read there was only one miscue in the text, moving a period from one side of the word “too” to the other. This changed the meaning of both sentences. Other than this and still rushing a bit she read the passage flawlessly, scoring independent for accuracy. If she had the slightest bit of difficulty she would look to the ceiling and state, ”that’s hard.” This took place multiple times during every lesson. It seems to me that to be more effective as a tutor or a teacher I need to come up with some qualitative assessment to give the student to gauge weather something is actually too hard. With limited time in our sessions to have four or five interruptions of “it’s too hard.” Then we have to stop and I need to explain why it isn’t too hard before we continue. Perhaps asking her if there is a word she does not recognize or understand within the text. We orally discussed what she was visualizing but there is no written record so all I have to look back on are my notes and nothing the student actually created. I also would like to record audio, this would require further permissions but having an audio recording to listen to for each session would be a great way to review and make a better analysis of each session. The Voice Thread program would work perfectly for this application and would save on paper cost as the use of Ipads would eliminate written text. I also feel that giving the student the choice of reading text would make them feel a greater part of their learning and give them a little more ownership in the lesson. By this I would not allow them the choice of anything but give them a list of preselected options in the hopes that one might pique their interest. I feel the level that I provided engagement of the student could have been elevated; when she started to improve quickly I could have switched up and chosen more challenging texts forcing her to stretch more with every
