There were many prominent them in the novel Where’d You Go Bernadette including, coming of age, personal growth and perseverance, the most prominent one being coming of age. Many characters attitudes and actions change drastically during the duration of the book including those of Bee and Mrs. Griffin. Bee is introduced as a bright, young, girl who loves her home and her family. This all changes once her mom, Bernadette, disappears. her mom’s disappearance caused Bee to become obsessed with finding her at all costs. “Remember what a sweet, quiet girl was? Well, the child is unrecognizable, i tell you, absolutely consumed with hatred” (Semple 231). After being sent home from her boarding school, Bee asked her dad if they could still go to Antartica to reconnect, but hiding her true feelings of hopefully finding her mom while they were there. Mrs. Griffin is a local mom at Bee’s school who thinks that Bernadette is a crazy loner who doesn't care about anyone but herself. However, her perception towards Bernadette changes greatly by the end of the story. From the beginning, Mrs. Griffin hated Bernadette and after having her house be destroyed by her, was out to get her. She manipulated the minds of many people, including Bernadette’s husband, into thinking she was crazy. After hearing that she was going to be put in a mental hospital however, she set out to try to help Bernadette out of the situation. “The truth? My lies and exaggerations would be responsible for a mother being locked up” (Semple 239). This and the fact that her son was a drug addict, helped Mrs. Griffin realize that she had to learn not to judge a book by its cover, and to treat everyone with respect no matter how much you might not like
