Everybody goes through a stage in their life where they want to be independent. In Joyce Carol Oates “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” the main character Connie shows many signs of wanting to just grow up and move on to the next stage in her life. I relate to the story through the character Connie, as she represents and gives off different themes that contribute to the bigger picture of the story that I find myself relating to, such as a desire to grow up and having two different personas that showcase an internal confusion of who I am. Increasingly throughout the last couple of years in my life, I have found myself having a growing fire within me that is pushing me to want to become more independent and act more as a grown up. I believe this is because of the age difference I have compared to people that I talk to on a regular day to day basis. During middle school, I did sixth and seventh grade in one year. As a result, the kids in my grade are typically one or two years older than me because I was already on the younger side due to having a summer birthday. Even now, I am constantly around seventeen year olds when I am only fifteen. For comparison, half of the freshman coming into high school are fifteen. On top of that, I take college classes with a very large range of ages. So, to fit in I try to act older than what I am. It has crossed my mind, and I …show more content…
What I have figured out about myself is only a fraction of who I am, and as I grow older, I hope to continue putting together the puzzle pieces of who I am until I figure out who I am as a person. As of now, I believe I need to find a mix of who I am at home and who I am around my friend, and in this present day that is who I truly am. I also believe I need to stop pretending to be someone I am not, and maybe then I will be able to figure out who I actually
