The relationship between Connie and her father is not really discussed very much in depth. She seems to have a positive attitude toward him, even though he is not a very involved parent, and shows very little interest in Connie’s life.
In the Movie, ‘Smooth Talk’ the relationship between Connie and her mother is much worse than the story ‘Where Are You Going Where Have You Been’ because in the in the movie Connie is more disrespectful to her mother. Connie is more rebellious and self-centered so this makes the relationship between them worse. The way that Connie interacts with her mother is different because she is more defiant in the movie than in the book. In the movie, Connie’s mother also treats her worse than in the book. Her mother tries to embarrass her in front of her friends for forgetting to get some supplies she was supposed to pick up from the store. She is very suspicious of him as soon as he pulls up to the house. Arnold 's appearance is that of a slightly muscular middle-aged man who looks like he’s wearing a wig and walks like he has hooves. Connie is slightly intrigued, yet fearful of him, so she stays behind the screen door and tries to make it obvious that she wants nothing to do with him. She is hoping to discourage him, so that he would leave, but Arnold isn’t about to give up easily. He continues to harass Connie and eventually she realizes that she is dealing with a Psychopath. He continues to bother her and then he makes threats toward her family members. Connie tries to call for help, but is too fearful to call the authorities. Arnold persists and eventually gets Connie to join him in his car and takes her for a ride. As Connie leaves the house Arnold calls her his little blue- eyed girl. I conclude that Arnold kidnaps Connie and murders
