Connie is a very confused young girl she does not quite know where she is wanting to go in life. The only thing she is sure of is that her mother is jealous of her beauty and favors her older sister more. Connie’s family seems normal, but the view on the women is that they are fighting for you is to be accepted in society. The story states in this piece about Connie“Everything about her had two sides to it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home: her walk, which could be childlike and bobbing, or languid enough to make anyone think she was hearing music in her head; her mouth, which was pale and smirking most of the time, but bright and pink on these evenings out; her laugh, which was cynical and drawling at home—"Ha, ha, very funny,"—but highpitched and nervous anywhere else, like the jingling of the charms on her bracelet.”(1004) All this is showed to point out how much Connie individually changed herself to have her friend and society accept her. Connie is looking for freedom in her life because she feels surrounded by her family and gets away by going to the mall then sneaking off to the older kid hangout. She does not know what the life she desires yet is, but before she can choose, it is chosen for her by Arnold Friend. Arnold friend is a main dressing like a boy who wishes to have Connie and has come to her house for her. All the optimism and prosperity in her life is now gone and replaced with the threat of Arnold friend. Connie was once a inquired girl looking for her place in life, but now it has been all unsettled by Arnold
