Where are the Mericans The short story Mericans is about the time these bi cultural kids spend waiting for their so called awful grandmother inside of the church. In the short story “Mericans" the setting is never specified. I feel like this was done on purpose so the readers can decide for themselves. The setting to a story is one of the most important aspects of a story . The settings develops the characters because they are shaped by their surroundings. It also helps develop the plot so that it can be more easily transitioned. The main purpose of this short story was to show how multi cultural kids experience different interaction based on their race and the setting, how the kids interact greatly affect people actions towards them. Though the exact location of the church was never mentioned it, can be inferred that it’s either in Mexico or in the south west United States like Texas or California. I believe the story is set in the United States. The kids are outside waiting and their is a plaza that seems similar to a park or outdoor shopping center which are very common in America. When the tourist greet them the kids react as if it is a common question they receive. With that being said it adds to the feeling of it being it the united states, because where they its common for people to mistake them for solely spanish speaking. The church they're are waiting for their grandmother at seems very classical. The mental picture of the church is a small building big enough to hold maybe twenty or thirty people. I also imagine it a very tight knit community church where everybody knows everybody and the kids have a reputation of being disruptive and disrespectful inside of the church. That behavior could come from the kids not respecting their culture. They do not see the old culture as being relevant in their lives other than when they are made

It was inevitable that the sound of laughter from children his own age, the buoyant jokes they 'd utter and the encouraging words they’d say to one another would cause numerous questions to run through his mind, "How does it feel to be like them? To not be ashamed of who they are and where they’d come from? " It’d leave him wondering how it would feel to be accepted. It’s tough to imagine children experiencing something as horrid as discrimination, it’s even harder to believe they’re also the ones causing it. How they see the universe and everybody in it is influenced by those around them.…

Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. As these two writers "Dwight Okita" and "Sandra Cisneros" were highly influenced by the American culture remind us how it was in the 1800s. "In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers” by Dwight Okita, and “Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros published experiences about the topic of American identity. They are both similar but Okita's poem is more likely about the family experience and Cisneros's short story talks more about where the family came from. In the poem “In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers” by Dwight Okita is about how a fourteen year old girl experiences how it feels like to be neglected as an American and she and her family would be sent to another country or place/relocation centers outside or within US area from her white bestfriend.…

In the stories “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers and The Contender by Robert Lipsyte, the authors both use snapshots of setting and characters to tell the reader what the characters are doing and how they’re feeling. The treasure of lemon by Walter Dean Myers will help people understand the story more with snapshot.…

I have been reading the book Lord The Flies, by the author named William Golding. The book was given out in 1954, which leads us into the literary period of Postmodernism. The most common trait for this period is the very increasing diversity between the different novels written. In the earlier periods, the authors wanted to be fairly grounded, concrete and structured; but now they wanted more of the abstract and unrealistic plots, and often with paradoxes of various kinds. It is also said that authors of the Postmodern period after World War II very often saw the world as troubled and fragmented, like it was on the edge of disaster.…
